We are not even talking about all mothers, fathers and families in general, who, even without school since the beginning of March, will be forced to wait afterwards. September 20 and 21 electionsGiven that many regions have decided, evading Minister Azzolina’s intention to reopen the 14th as a national date, to postpone the start to other days.
All this while, in the rest of Europe, the schools Meanwhile, they closed, then reopened, then closed, and finally reopened, handling related, but not huge, consequential problems. Unfortunately for us all normality and common sense seem impossible. And in fact what I’m seeing, in the Facebook mothers groups, talking to friends and acquaintances, is really incredible. And the tragic too.
L ‘calendar, first of all. In many schools it has been reduced. Whether it’s morning preschool for those who work early or after school, but also the same normal teaching, the cuts have been strong in many schools, with the result that families have the “new” school from perhaps eight o’clock. half to eleven thirty in the morning. Or instead of four o’clock the departure at two.
The other problem concerns canteen: in many cases it has literally disappeared, or will arrive in October, with an inexplicable month of delay. In other cases, it will absurdly be replaced by a lunch box with ready meals in a plastic case, with due respect for sustainability but above all informative, because no study has shown the danger of a normal dining room compared to COVID-19In fact, meals prepared on site are highly recommended for the health of students, who often find themselves eating food at their counter – an aberration that I find similar to the salad plate in front of the computer, with the difference that here it is not an option, but it is imposed on children (and families) who need it sociability and also to stretch the legs.
And by the way: I have been told by teachers who have decided that by not being able to guarantee the distance of one meter for children outside the desks, they will force them to sit during all class hours, including full time. A choice simply hallucinating, although dictated by an interpretation of the law, which I do not understand how it can be endorsed by a school director or by the ministry itself.
In short, in practice, the “new” school starts again with a very reduced schedule and eliminating all aspects of sociability, considered dangerous for the purposes of contagion: through, also, all sports and all aspects. Recreational activities after school, who can connect students of different classes (but if the students, at least those who can afford it, all go to football, dance or swim in other clubs, then wouldn’t it be better if they enter the school as well?). One wonders if it wasn’t worth staying with then distance education, which, moreover, many institutes continue to practice, even here, it seems to me, going against the directions of the ministry.
The truth is that Covid has made the school much worse. Maybe better for teachers, more online interviews and more supervised students, as Alex Corlazzoli wrote on this blog. Certainly worse for children and adolescents and even more so for their families. As always, a bit like health care, the “ass” rule also applies to school: if you were born in a region where health care works, that’s fine, otherwise your problems. So if you end up in an institution with great leaders and teachers, maybe you can keep working and lead a normal life, otherwise it will be hell.
It is the price of the much acclaimed autonomy. Among other things, being the anti Covid measures a last minute surprise: to date, more than half of the families and perhaps more, have not had any communication! – Not even the change school quote. Old-school flaws, reduced hours, insufficient after-school hours, unhealthy dining rooms, low physical activity for children and young people, staff shortages seem to be magnified. They remain the same, but to a greater extent and in greater severity. However, the months to prepare were many, while the highly regarded revolutionary measure, the bench on wheels, it hasn’t even arrived yet.
The consequences of all this on families and mothers in particular are incalculable. I have listened to truly desperate women. If I had taken away a morning preschool, combined with an after-school, maybe combined with grandparents, maybe you could work full time. But if the first is skipped, the second is reduced, if it is necessary to preserve the grandparents because they are at risk of contagion as women will continue working? Babysitters can also be a problem when you can afford them.
But even here there is the risk of contagion, especially when, due to the now very busy schedule of today’s children, it may be necessary to alternate several because finding who will cover you for a week is difficult. In all of this, we are not considering what represents the greatest fear of all of us: namely, a return of infections, or quarantine in case of positivity, or in any case the duty to support a child with a cold and perhaps a slight disturbance at home. Other days not covered by anyone, other days of tiring and heavy acrobatics.
me leave That the government would like to give away to parents with quarantined children would also be fine if it weren’t for the fact that they are mainly for employees and, furthermore, they do not take into account that those who work and have responsibilities, or perhaps have a company, I can not stop of work. You need someone to stay with your child, not to stop working when the child is home. All of this causes me infinite sadness. I know that many schools have done a great job, that they were alone, that we are in a pandemic situation.
And yet the endless emergence of a school does not seem to me to be sufficiently taken into account. inadequate which Covid, as I said, has made it even worse. I don’t think you talk about it enough, I don’t think you care about the fact that so many mothers quit their jobs. Finally, we do not worry about a share of parents who will not send their children to school, especially the little ones. It is not surprising that there is an increase in the phenomenon ofHomeschooling, of the school in house. A practice that if done with all the trimmings can replace normal school even for the better, if instead done in a hurry or in any case without preparation, it only runs the risk of removing children from the school environment.
In short, we are preparing for a beginning that is not such and that is making this September a dramatic one for many parents and for children and young people. Stop at the counter, with a lunch box in plastic on the legs, the mask in schools where the subway is not guaranteed, the impossibility of moving during breaks or going out. This doesn’t look like a school to me. Could have been done better, could have been done otherwise (By the way, but the generalized school? The museums, the parks, the spaces to use as a school? Where are they?).
And to conclude the image: in an ironic cartoon, the Facebook group Fuck mom, that collects the rumors of 60 thousand mothers, makes two pairs of children talk in the street. The former make fun of the latter who go to school all proud, reminding them that the school is closed for lack of staff and spaces, but both respond “But we go to private school, losers.” Here, aside from a few smaller companions forced to close, the other bitter truth is that most of institutes private managed to guarantee full hours, normal dining and from day one. Proof that no, the problem is not Covid-19.
