“If this is our destination, we might as well shut down. Ordinances and decrees are a swing in which they make us die slowly. As of today, Campania is officially a red zone also for bars, which will only be allowed to carry and deliver. So Claudio Pontieri, 36 years old, wife and two children, owner of the Santoro bar in via dell’Epomeo, throws in the towel and announces: “If I have to see my baby die after 10 years of sacrifices and my employees end up on the street, I prefer to go down my blinds “.
“Now we are really going to die. How do you do it? For weeks I have seen more and more croissants on my window and less and less coffee on the counter. We might as well shut up and go home. Claudio Pontieri is a young entrepreneur from Soccavo, where he has a bar in the very central via dell’Epomeo. A street that until last March was packed with people entering and leaving shops and bars like yours. “From the first closure the business stopped – explains Claudio, married and father of two girls aged 3 and 6 – there was a small sign of recovery in September. Then, at the beginning of October, we fell back into an abyss from which it will be difficult to get out, especially now that we are in the red zone. Before, his bar was packed with customers: “Breakfast, snacks and sweets on Sundays were the reasons why people came to us, even for a relaxing break. Now there are those who are even afraid to go in to have a coffee at the counter, because they are afraid of catching it. I wonder what the difference is between a bar and another type of store that stays open and where people come and go. “At this rate and with this new ordinance it is better to lower the shutters – announces the operator – and see 10 years of sacrifices thrown in, than to die in slow agony.” Until 8 months ago Pontieri had 5 employees: «Now I have 3 and it has already been deleterious, because whoever works with me is my second family. We had to adapt to the regulations and today we have a worker behind the counter and 2 who make home deliveries, but now I will have to send them home as well. In addition, the economic aid of the State does not reach or has been interrupted: «The fund of dismissal and bonuses of 600 euros arrived only the first month and to the minimum, then everything stopped. The truth is that both my collaborators and I have rents and bills to pay, as well as families to take care of. And about Christmas that is coming a month from now, Claudio reflects: «From today I should have prepared, as every year, the Christmas pastries, but I will not do it because it would be another deficit. I already had to fire some of the staff, putting up a small traffic light at the entrance to let customers in. Now just with takeout and home delivery alone the economy will stagnate again. I can’t help closing. ”
