From our correspondent
PISTICCI (Matera)
– «Repent and be ashamed of what you have done. Only then will they be able to help their families, to help justice and in some way mitigate our pain. Mister Antonio (fantasy name), is a broken father. Antonio, fifty-five years old, left Marconia di Pisticci 40 years ago to come to England in search of work. Today he owns a hotel chain. On September 6, his daughter and a friend, both 15 years old, were victims of violence in which a group of eight children – four detainees and another four investigated – are accused during a private party in Marconia. We found him with his wife in the office of the lawyer Giuseppe Rago, a family lawyer.

When did you find out what had happened to your daughter, what did you think of it?
“I was in England, my oldest daughter was trying to tell me on the phone and she could barely speak. He told me strange phrases that I did not understand. She was crying, she was upset. I said: what happened? And she stuttered, without giving me an answer. Then my brother called me and told me what happened. The world fell on me. ”

Five hours later, she was reunited with her daughter, a rape victim, at the Madonna delle Grazie hospital in Matera. What was the first thing he said to you?
“Be strong”.

And answer?
“Always!” (Always!)

Getting your daughter to forget brutal violence won’t be easy.
“My daughter is a very strong, energetic and intelligent girl. I really hope he can recover as soon as possible.

Now, what are your conditions?
“He had a smile brighter than the stars. Now she doesn’t have it anymore. ‘

Did you know the people accused of raping your daughter?
“No. Marconia is left alone with some of my childhood friends. All the others have emigrated to America and France and that is why their children live there, they could not have been the ones who went to the party.”

What is your idea of the boys who attacked your daughter?
«They are tramps, criminals. That is why I tell you to repent, as the Archbishop of Matera-Irsina also requested during the Mass celebrated on Sunday in Marconia. For these young people it could be an opportunity to close with the past and start a new life. Now their families, the community, the institutions must open their eyes and realize in time the discomfort that exists in these young people from Marconia ».

Will you return to your country again?
“Of course. I had a lot of solidarity from my fellow villagers. They told me:” You don’t have to judge us all the same. “It’s a terrible story, a devastating wound: I’m afraid it will never heal. Since my wife and I got here , our daughter hasn’t given up on us for a second. ‘

Do you have faith in Italian justice?
“The first thing I heard from the police when I got to the hospital was: ‘Don’t worry, justice will be done.’ I hope not to be disappointed. For the sake of my daughter I hope an exemplary sentence.
