On Sunday August 30, there were heavy rains in the northeast causing damage and disruption of highway and rail traffic, especially in Trentino-Alto Adige.
The flooding of the river Adige caused the closure of the Brennero motorway in both directions between Bolzano and San Michele all’Adige, and the flooding of the river Isarco caused the interruption of rail traffic between Ponte Gardena and Bressanone. In Egna, in Bolzano province, the authorities ordered the evacuation of 600 people. In Chiusa, also in the province of Bolzano, where the Eisack of the banks broke out, Civil Protection invited residents not to circulate through the town and to move to the upper floors of the houses.

On Monday morning the Brennero motorway was reopened in the section interrupted on Sunday, as the Adige fell below the level considered alarm. The evacuation to Egna was suspended and therefore the inhabitants were able to return to their homes. Between Saturday and Sunday about 3 thousand firefighters carried out more than 400 interventions.
At San Michele all’Adige, debris and logs carried by the river in the flood caused the collapse of a bike path over the river. Numerous footbridges over the Adige have been closed in Bolzano and other cities. At Val di Non, in Cles, a landslide hit the Trento-Malé railway line before the train headed for Trento. The driver managed to stop in time and there were no injuries. Also in this case the railway section was interrupted.
