The Ragusa Police arrested a 59-year-old man, seriously suspected of the crime of abandonment of a newborn. On November 4, following the arrival of a report to the Operations Room, the Volanti policemen had rescued a abandoned baby inside a plastic bag.

The timely intervention of the police and the immediate attention of the health personnel, had saved the life of the child who had been found naked, wrapped only in a blanket and with the umbilical cord not closed. The Flying Squad investigators thus listened to the man who had found the baby, who claimed to have noticed, in front of his butcher, a plastic bag and had approached to remove it, believing that it contained garbage, but upon hearing moans that he had later discovered the presence of the boy, then asked for help from a friend who, rushed to the place of the discovery, decided with him to notify the police.
However, the police continued the investigations to learn the true dynamics of the discovery of the minor, despite the man’s statements about the circumstances of the discovery. Investigations revealed that the man, romantically linked to a 41-year-old woman, on the night of November 4, after receiving a strange request for help from the woman, he went home in Modica and she had discovered that her partner had just given birth to a boy. The woman had asked the man to drop the boy off at the hospital, but instead he had decided to put him in a plastic bag and transport him to Ragusa, staging the discovery. Only the immediate intervention of the police and an ambulance caused the boy to be transferred to the hospital and immediately admitted to intensive care due to the long time he spent in the cold and without minimal care. The man, after the formalities, was placed under house arrest at his home at the disposal of the Judiciary.
