Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has criticized protests across the country against restrictions on abortion and has announced a tough response “to barbarism, vandalism and aggression.” Morawiecki has asked for the army’s help and in a YouTube message he expresses fear of escalating social tension and addresses the “wisdom of the silent majority.”
“Don’t scare us with the army in the streets: if necessary, we will do the confinement.” Marta Lempart, from the women’s organization “The Women’s Strike”, responds in this way to the Polish prime minister, who has asked the military for help in dealing with the ongoing protests in Poland against the severe restrictions on abortion. Lempart has called on Poles to protest since last Thursday, following the Constitutional Court’s decision on the termination of pregnancy, now prohibited even in the case of serious malformations of the fetus.
“We must defend the Church. I invite all members of the Pis and all our supporters to contribute to the defense of the churches, which today, for the first time in the history of Poland, are under attack.” This was stated by Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of the ruling Pis party and deputy prime minister of the executive with delegation to the inter-ministerial security committee. “The time has come when we must know how to say no to those who want to destroy us. Let us defend Poland,” says the deputy prime minister.
