“Positive cases even after 14 days” This is what the quarantine will look like now

“We have decided to allow quarantined people to spread it, to protect and guarantee them and other citizens,” Gallera explained yesterday at the press conference. It means that doctors must extend the quarantine, through a certificate, to all those who have completed the 14 days and that, in theory, they should return to work ». Those who are now home must remain in solitary confinement until May 3, on the card on the last day of closure before the start of “phase 2”. Instead, citizens who are positive in the next few days will receive a certificate that will no longer be for 14 days (the incubation period for the virus within which symptoms usually occur), but 28.

Why was this decision made? Because epidemiological investigations carried out by the Ats, also in Bergamo, say that there are cases of positive results, therefore contagious, even after the “classic” two weeks. Getting them back to work, even if they are asymptomatic, perhaps in places like supermarkets or businesses, could fuel the epidemic again.

Massimo Giupponi, general manager of Ats Bergamo, hopes in this way “to be able to handle the transition phase between the conclusion of the disease and the time when there will be greater availability of tests, with tools that will facilitate the return to I work according to the rules ». A problem especially in Bergamo, because it is the province where we get sick first and where the risk, “Giupponi continues, of returning to work early is greater, without the possibility of getting tests and tampons. There has been an accurate report from the Medical Association on the need to adopt rules that allow the extension of the quarantine period. For our territory it is a very important measure and it is a pleasure that it has been adopted throughout the region. “

To date, the guidelines of the Superior Institute of Health indicate that a Covid-19 positive citizen, asymptomatic or cured of the symptoms, must undergo a test with a swab to verify the negative effect no earlier than seven days. If it is still positive, it should be tested after another seven days. Once negative, the swab should be repeated 24 hours apart. Only then, with the second negative result, the patient has officially recovered. A complex procedure, impossible in Lombardy due to the limited number of swabs, around 10,000 per day. Few, given the high demand. “Whoever did not take a swab at the beginning does not even at the end of the disease,” explains Guido Marinoni, president of the medical association of the province of Bergamo. The data that we have said that after a month there are still positive people, who can transmit the infection. The 28 days is a reasonable time to allow the Region to equip itself with swabs, thereby certifying whether a person is negative or even positive. I already say that it will be impossible to find all the positive aspects: gloves and masks will continue to be essential ».
