Just a few weeks ago it was announced by the Vatican that the traditional ceremony of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in Piazza di Spagna would not take place due to the emergency of the coronavirus and to comply with anti-contagion measures. Instead, as many imagined, Pope Francis did the same for a quick blessing and tribute to the Virgin, under a downpour. The firefighters, also as always, climbed the ladder to place a wreath on the statue of the Virgin in one of the most evocative places in Rome.
The security device was installed at dawn, when no one was there. The Holy Father arrived with the Vatican car with the escort and paid homage to the Immaculate Conception right at the foot of the obelisk. Around him the police, a company of the Army, personnel of the Vatican gendarmerie and only a few Romans passing through. Then Pope Francis returned to San Pietro. But at least even in this bad year the tradition of the Immaculate Conception was respected. And this is what matters.
