Pompeii continues to amaze the world and reveal new treasures.

In the new excavations that have been resumed thanks to the maintenance and restoration project of the Regio V they resurfaced a perfectly preserved thermopoly with the image of aa sea nymph on horseback and animals with colors so bright and vivid that they seem almost three-dimensional.

Somehow this discovery worries us: the Thermopoly (Thermopolium) was the typical food and hot drinks store facing the street. the progenitor of our contemporary fast food – hot tables: proof of what was already known, that the Romans were two thousand years ahead of the great American chains.

Here are the photos of the exceptional find

In particular, the discovery in the containers of the Thermopoly of traces of food sold on the street. In fact, it was the custom of the Pompeians, as in the whole world of ancient Rome, to consume hot food and drinks in the open air. Scholars at the Pompeii Archaeological Park are already analyzing the material to see to what extent this discovery can expand the knowledge about the eating habits of Roman times.

Enthusiastic Minister of Heritage and Cultural Activities, Dario Franceschini: With teamwork, which required legislative norms and the quality of people, today Pompeii is indicated in the world as an example of protection and management, once again being one of the most visited in Italy where research is being carried out, excavation continues and extraordinary discoveries like this are made.

Explain Massimo osanna, new general director of the Ministry’s Museums and interim director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park: In addition to being another testimony of daily life in Pompeii, the possibilities of analysis of this Thermopoly are exceptional, because for the first time a complete environment with methodologies and cutting-edge technologies that are returning unprecedented data. At work an interdisciplinary team made up of a physical anthropologist, archaeologist, archaeobotanist, archaeologist, geologist, volcanologist: the analyzes already carried out in Pompeii will be accompanied by further chemical analyzes in the laboratory to understand the content of the dolia, that is, containers of terracotta.

Bone fragments

In this excavation phase (together with some human bones) have surged still life scenes, with representations of animals, probably sold in the room. As indicated in the announcement of the discovery, these are bone fragments, pertinent to the animals themselves, they were also found inside containers obtained from the thickness of the counter containing food intended for sale. Like the two mallards exposed upside down, ready to be prepared and eaten, a rooster and a dog on a leash, almost a warning in the manner of the famous Cave Canem. Not here.

Homophobic graffiti

There is also an ironic graffiti inscription: Nicia cinede cacato can be read in the frame that encloses the painting of the dog. That is to say: Nicias (probably a freedman from Greece) Cacatore, inverted, perhaps (so the scholars suppose) left to make fun of the owner or someone who worked in the thermopoly. Valeria Amoretti, the Park’s official anthropologist, has already announced the first findings: The first analyzes confirm that the paintings on the counter represent, at least in part, the food and beverages actually sold within the thermopoly: between the counters, paintings are represented. two mallards, and indeed a duck bone fragment was found inside one of the containers, along with pig, goats (i.e. goats and sheep, ed), fish and land snails, demonstrating the great variety of products of animal origin used for the preparation of dishes.
