The first problems in the distribution of Pfizer vaccine in Germany. The authorities in charge raised doubts about the recorded temperature, so they blocked some administration operations on day V. According to the same company, temperature is a fundamental aspect in the conservation of doses.
Abnormality in Pfizer vaccine loads in Germany
It had already happened in the United States, where maxi procedures are being carried out to bring the vaccine to areas of the vast country, and it is also being repeated in Germany. The temperature recorded in some dose loads of the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech is not the one indicated by the companies, and therefore the shipments are blocked or returned to sender.
Several local media report that the process has been postponed or canceled in Bavaria, especially in the Lichtenfels district. The programs have also been modified in the cities of Coburg, Kronach, Kulmbach, Hof, Bayreuth and Wunsiedel, Adnkronos reports citing local media. In the district of Dillingen everything has been postponed until tomorrow, Monday, December 28.
Local administrations are now waiting to receive clarifications from manufacturing companies.
Last week, four vaccine shipments, each containing nearly 1,000 doses of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine, were returned to the United States due to doubts about the temperature. In all four cases, the temperature recorded was much lower than expected.
The vaccine produced by Pfizer and the German BioNTech should be stored at approximate temperature 70 degrees below zero. Once thawed (which must be done following a specific procedure), the vaccine can continue to be used for 5 days.
The European V-day was accompanied by a lot of controversy because the number of doses received in recent days by Germany has been much higher than in other countries, including Italy. Each German Lander received 9,750 vials, for a total of 150,000 for all of Germany.
Vaccine, controversy over the number of doses for Italy and Germany
The Health Ministry explained that contracts with vaccine manufacturers, as illustrated in the Covid-19 Vaccination Strategic Plan, are stipulated directly by the European Commission on behalf of all EU member countries. Each country receives the percentage of dose owed in proportion to the population, according to Eurostat estimates.
Starting next week, 470 thousand weekly doses will arrive in Italy.
