Judge of the third section of the anti-terrorist court in Cairo, Egypt, has decided that the Egyptian student Patrick Zaki will have to remain in prison for another 45 days. The sentence was pronounced today, Monday, December 7, after the hearing that had been held yesterday and that was initially set for Saturday. The judge’s decision was released on Twitter by Eipr, the non-governmental organization for which Zaki works as a researcher.
On Sunday, the judge had heard the thesis of Zaki’s lawyers, who demanded his release, also motivating it with the torture that the student suffered during interrogations by the Egyptian secret services.
Patrick George Zaki is 28 years old and moved to Bologna more than a year ago for his PhD. On February 9, while returning to his hometown, Mansura, he was arrested when he landed in Cairo for no apparent reason. Only later did the Egyptian authorities inform him that he was accused of subversive propaganda. The accusation is of having published fake news with the intention of disturbing social peace, of having incited protests against the public authority, of having supported the overthrow of the Egyptian state, of having used social networks to undermine social order. and public security, and instigation of violence and terrorism, all accusations that in Egypt are usually directed at dissidents or people critical of the government.
