Romanian Prime Minister Ludovic Orban, of the National Liberal Party, resigned after the general elections that gave victory to the PSD, the Social Democratic Party. “I want my resignation to clearly show that I am not holding on to any position,” Orban said, “I put Romania’s interests above those of NLP and mine.”
His government remains in power on an interim basis and will have to be replaced within 45 days. Until then, Defense Minister Nicolae Ciuca will be the prime minister appointed by President Klaus Iohannis. In the elections, the PSD obtained 30% of the votes, the PNL about 5 points less. But the Social Democratic party does not have a clear majority or a determined ally, while the party of the outgoing prime minister could unite in a government with the eco-liberal alliance Usr-Plus and with the Hungarian minority party, Udmr.
According to the media, President Klaus Iohannis Orban may have urged the prime minister to resign also with the prospect of facilitating the entry into government of the Usr-Plus party, recently critical of the prime minister. Among the surprises of the vote, the one represented by the ultra-nationalist Aur, founded only in September 2019 and which will be represented for the first time in parliament.
