A hundred people have so far been arrested by police in Hong Kong due to pro-democracy protests in Kowloon, where policemen in riot gear used cartridges and sharp sprays to disperse the crowd. This was reported in the local media, when the police at 17:00 local time (11:00 in Italy) had reported 90 arrests carried out in Yau Tsim Mong, of which 87 for joining illegal demonstrations. The protests are linked to the failed political elections that should have been held today and which have been postponed until September 5, 2021 due to the fear of the Covid-19 wave in the former British colony.
The postponement of the vote for the renewal of the local parliament, announced by Governor Carrie Lam, was harshly contested by the pro-democracy opposition that aimed to reap total success, replicating the result of the 2019 district elections with the impetus of the entrenched opposition governmental.
In the afternoon, the agents reacted to slogans such as “Give me back my vote!” and “corrupt policemen”. In the images broadcast live, also on the police Facebook account, the arrest of three well-known pro-democracy activists could be seen: Leung Kwok-hung, Figo Chan and Raphael Wong.
And an opposition activist was arrested by the police for “uttering seditious words” hours before the demonstration. The arrest of Tam Tak-chi, vice president of the radical Democratic Party of People’s Power, is the latest arrest of a prominent supporter of democracy in the financial center. Tam, a former radio host known as “Fast Beat”, was arrested at his home in northeast Hong Kong by police officers from the National Security Team. The arrest did not take place under the new law, police said.
