When it comes to immigration to Sicily, Giorgio La Pira’s name comes up almost automatically. As if the “son of our land”, the “politician-saint” of Pozzallo, were the only one capable of returning a little peace to the island even today. Everyone mentions it: mayors and representatives of institutions at all levels, from the coast to the interior. And the prelates too, of course. La Pira jumps to reiterate that the true image of Sicily is that of a land of welcome, a blessed land, a Christian land born to unite, not to unleash. Sometimes, there are those who mention it just to protect themselves, as if saying “racist of me? I come from the land of La Pira! ”. So much so, but in the end if we look at what is happening in Sicilian squares in recent weeks, at the rallies called for the elections, it would almost seem that the “venerable politician” has not even set foot in the island.
