After the failure of Italy, long live the junk in search of a political future. Air of rapprochement with the Democrats
He is one of the sure losers of the last electoral round. Matteo Renzi and his lively Italy haven’t even made it to beloved Tuscany. And so, since Monday night, the scrap dealer wonders about his political future. The centrist experiment seems not to have given the expected existence. Neither the party of the former prime minister, nor Carlo Calenda’s Action, much less Emma Bonino’s Più Europa have succeeded. In light of these results, it is unlikely that the solo adventure could take a long time, also because an electoral law has to be drafted whose barrier, even if it were 3%, would seriously risk keeping the scrap dealer out of Parliament.

Even before the Regionals these arguments were on the agenda. And if he says that Renzi had already planned the path that would eventually lead him back to the Democratic Party. A defeat in the Democratic elections – in the days immediately prior to the vote, the polls show the 5-1 scenario in favor of the center-right – would in all probability mean the end of the secretariat of Nicola Zingaretti with the governor of Emilia Romagna Stefano Bonaccini ready to take his place. Well, with Bonaccini at the helm, Renzi could have spoken of a turning point, of a more inclusive party and justified the return to the base. It is no coincidence that Bonaccini himself appears at events promoted by Renzi and, in an interview, said that he dreamed of a Pd “with Renzi and Bersani.”
But then things went differently. Zingaretti won the elections and has never been so firm at the head of the party. It is from that moment that something has changed in the scrapper’s communication. First, he recognized the almost exclusive merits of the secretary of the Democratic Party in the victory in the Regionals. Second, he began to advocate for his entry into government. “Deputy Prime Minister Zingaretti? He did well both as president of the province and president of the region, if he wants he will be an excellent deputy prime minister. If not, we will respect him.”
The hope that Zingaretti will leave the Democratic Party secretariat should he enter government is weak. In any case, he will leave the presidency of Lazio, since the two roles are incompatible by law. But in the meantime, Renzi tries to create a bridge with the world with which he had broken. After all, these are little signs that take a long time to turn into something more serious. With political elections scheduled not to be held before 2023, the march of rapprochement can continue calmly.
