The UN agency for international solidarity in the fight against hunger was rewarded “for its efforts to combat hunger, for its contribution to the improvement of peace conditions in conflict-affected areas and the driving force behind efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon in war and conflict. ” The WPF was chosen among the 318 nominations (211 people and 107 organizations) that arrived for this year, the fourth highest number in history (THE NOBEL OF LITERATURE TO LOUISE GLÜCK).

The World Food Program is the world’s largest humanitarian organization fighting hunger and promoting food security. In 2019, WFP assisted nearly 100 million people in 88 countries who were highly food insecure. The Nobel Committee also recalled that in 2019 135 million people suffered from hunger, the highest number in many years. In other words, it is largely due to wars and conflicts. That is why WFP action is seen as crucial and indispensable. Also, with the Coronavirus pandemic, the victims of hunger in the world have increased. In countries such as Yemen, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, South Sudan and Burkina Faso, the combination of violent conflict and the pandemic has led to a dramatic growth in the number of hungry people. In this scenario, “the World Food Program has demonstrated an impressive capacity to scale up its efforts.”

Among the candidates revealed, by choice of their proponents, were also activists from Hong Kong, NATO, the Brazilian indigenous leader and environmentalist Raoni Metuktire, the trio of whistleblowers made up of Julian Assange, Edward Snowden and Chelsea Manning, as well as the El former Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his Macedonian counterpart Zoran Zaev. Russian dissident Alexei Navalny is also in dispute. Organizations, however, included the Black Lives Matter movement, for bringing the issues of systemic racism and police brutality back to global attention.
