It is the most important thing for me to know that they were not reckless. It is a great pain, nobody will give us back our children but today we can do justice to their memory. Many times, during the trial, this woman left the courtroom so as not to hear expert opinions and testimonies that made her relive that pain, tormenting her hands on long walks with shining eyes through the corridors of the court. A year ago it was Saturday and on the school calendar it was already Christmas. Covid-19 was not yet a topic and Gaia von Freymann and Camilla Romagnoli, like all boys their age, had two weeks of partying, hanging out and having fun without thoughts. That night they would return home at the agreed time, midnight. They were supposed to be running so as not to be late, that they had not waited to get to the slopes because it was raining, that they had “distracted” holding hands.
Almost exactly one year later, the judge ruled that his death was not caused by unfortunate frivolity, not on your part. “Justice is done – says Cristina Maggi, Camilla’s mother -. I am very happy that it really was discovered who our daughters were. Two prudent and judicious girls who have not committed any imprudence. And again: “We must believe in justice, I want to say it strongly tonight. Having given back to everyone her image of two non-villainous girls as we tried to paint them relieves us in part of the weight of this story, but as a mother I had no doubts and we have always supported her even in the trial. The coincidence of the sentence that arrived on the anniversary of his death goes almost unnoticed: «Soon it is Christmas, like a year ago. And if you want to know, we don’t even think about it. ”
The two mothers, who that night were found incredulous in the street in front of their dead daughters, remembered by a foreboding, by those telephones that had been silenced and guided in the act by the screams in the distance, they had also been compact in rejecting the apologies made in the courtroom by the accused, considering them “facade”. Camilla’s mother told herself “deeply disappointed, she seemed to be acting.” Also in the courtroom yesterday was Gaia’s father, Edward, who during the hearing held a photo of his daughter in his hands. Then, when the bell announced the reading of the phrase, he could not bear the emotion and preferred to leave.
