The case of the obsolete Italian pandemic plan that disappeared from the WHO website is expanded. In the episode of “Non è l’Arena” on Sunday, December 13, the microbiologist Maria Rita Gismondo sinks into the email sent to the researchers in Venice: “Shameful” and the Deputy Minister of Health, Pierpaolo Sileri, makes a fuss : “I am going to explain why the plan is old. Sufficient carelessness, I demand answers. The Secretary General must resign.”
In “Non è l’Arena”, the in-depth broadcast on LA7 news, Massimo Giletti is determined to move on with the story of the antiquated pandemic plan that cost the lives of a higher percentage of Italians than expected. “Was there a pandemic plan or not? – Giletti attacks – The protagonists are Ranieri Guerra, deputy director of the WHO, Francesco Zambon who coordinates the investigators of the WHO European office in Venice and who writes the report in which it is “denounced” that the 2017 program was a copy and paste of 2006 and that Italy’s reaction had been improvised, creative and chaotic. That report is published for 24 hours and then disappears. Who deleted it? The fact is that if the plan had been updated, 60,000 deaths could have been avoided. ” The journalist points out that, last Friday, Zambon granted an interview to “The Guardian”, unleashed the case of Italy at the international level in which he assures that he will probably be fired for speaking and bites Minister Speranza: “He does not even respond to our questions. By e-mail. Not even the press office responds. I find it incorrect and unwise because it doesn’t have to answer to me, but to Italians!
After checking email (a Raniel movie, nda) asking to change the date of the pandemic plan from 2006 to 2016, the director of the Microbiology laboratory of “L. Sacco ”from Milan, María Teresa Gismondo does not hesitate:“ I do not judge Minister Speranza or Ranieri Guerra, but they must clarify. I ask both of you to speak clearly. Email is embarrassing, embarrassing. And it is grotesque that a deputy director of the WHO has certain attitudes with those who try to interview him. If we were ready? Al Sacco, at the first hint of what was going on, we hastily gathered and have done so, but as our voluntary action. Instead, one must be ready for patient zero. But we should not meet in an emergency before. Unfortunately, each province, each city, each hospital has its own autonomy and if we go into it we discover that the 2002 Anthrax plan is still being discussed ”.
The Deputy Minister of Health, Pierpaolo Sileri echoes her: “The email is serious and the pandemic plan is certainly from 2006 because it is laconic and above all devoid of references to viruses that circulate in recent years, it does not report avian, h1n1 , Sars, so there is no doubt that he is old.2 But Sileri is furious with Giuseppe Ruocco who does not answer the journalists’ questions: “He coordinates the entire Ministry, he is the general secretary and for me he has to resign because he was always absent from the CTS. So, either there is carelessness or they cannot do several things together. It is better that I resign having seen the minutes of the CTS: it is always absent. I hate carelessness. I demand an answer: did this plan exist or not? Is it old or new? And who made it You never know who is in charge in Italy and therefore you never know whose fault it is. Unfortunately we will reach 100,000 dead and they will have died in vain if we do not know whose it is responsibility. I demand res put on! Enough this carelessness, I will fight with him until they throw me out.
Giletti goes on and shows a clip in which he was trying to listen to the investigators at the WHO Venice office who signed the report, but no one wanted to speak and so he gives Zambon’s lawyer Vittore d’Acquarone a voice: “El El The report was approved by the entire WHO chain of control on May 10, it was withdrawn on May 14 to correct some inaccuracies about China, then it was never reprinted. No green light has come to put it back on the site. Yes It is because of the objections contained in Ranieri Guerra’s email, which have not been resolved, I don’t know. I know that Guerra’s objection was verified by the researchers, but they tried to re-edit the same contents and they refused to modify their work ”.
Massimo Giletti has a new trick up his sleeve: a letter from Ranieri Guerra to the former Minister of Health, Beatrice Lorenzin, dated September 15, 2017. The letter reads: “The pandemic flu is not theoretical, but recurrent. In 2014 the WHO updated the plans, there is a need to prepare a new national plan for the preparation and response to an influenza pandemic ”. But nothing happened. And today, Pier Paolo Lunelli, former general of the Italian Army, confirms: “The anti-pandemic plan of January did not allow us to face this pandemic, it was prepared with the indications of 2005 and it was never verified in stocks. It had to be updated by a section of the Ministry of Health. In 2014 it was reiterated that updated pandemic plans were needed. If it was disability or neglect? One of the two definitions is correct. Zambon did everything possible to save Italy in his interview ”.
Regarding the first wave of Covid-19 and hospital supplies, Professor Gismondo bitterly recalls: “In March we took personal sips, in Bergamo some colleagues used garbage bags instead of gowns. That plan is really strong in 2006 ”.
