The fear of a third wave is real in China. The Asian giant from which it all started, and which contained the coronavirus long before other countries, has just been exacerbated anti Covid-19 measures in view of the Christmas season in many areas, including the capital Beijing. Cases have been on the rise for four days in a row, and the fear is that millions of vacationers could cause the pandemic to spiral out of control.
Coronavirus, China tightens measures
A sporadic increase in cases in Beijing has alarmed the Chinese authorities. And so different events scheduled for the end of the year celebrations are removed. The largest amusement park in the city, where a New Year’s concert was to be held, has been closed and there will be no countdown in the capital.
Life in Beijing had returned to more or less normal after the summer, but sporting events and trade fairs are now banned. Cinemas, libraries and museums must operate at 75% of their capacity.
There will be no celebrations in Beijing
In the past 13 days, Beijing has registered a total of 13 confirmed cases. Three in Chaoyang District, one in Xicheng and nine more in Shunyi. A figure that may seem small in a city of more than 20 million inhabitants, but that makes the health authorities fear that many cases have not been identified. Especially after the spread of the English variant of Covid-19, faster to spread and less traceable.
Shunyi District established “wartime” measures and is now testing all of its 800,000 residents. Chaoyang District, which borders Shunyi, just finished testing its 234,413 residents, none of whom tested positive. Those who have not received the tampon cannot leave the house, the administration said.
According to the Global Times, similar measures have been introduced not only in Beijing, but also in many other major cities in China.
Coronavirus, the situation in China
On Saturday, December 26, China reported a total of 22 new cases of Covid-19, up from 20 the day before. Twelve of these infections are local, health authorities said, the others imported from abroad. In addition, another 15 asymptomatic cases were recorded (Chinese estimates do not include patients who do not show symptoms in the official total of cases).
In total, China reported 86,955 cases and 4,634 deaths, although according to many experts these figures could be greatly underestimated by official reports.
