Waiting for DNA The prosecutor requested an examination of the DNA of the mother and the man to verify if the latter could really be the father of the child, something denied by his lawyer.
Lawyer for the suspect: “Without abandonment” “There was no abandonment of minors. I confirm the arrest and the existence of a delicate investigation but I would like to specify that the intervention of the police and an ambulance in the places where the minor was allegedly found was not accidental, nor was it in fact the suspect himself, in the company of a friend, who called the police so that the newborn was transported as soon as possible to the hospital and there, legitimately, entrusted to the care of health and adoption professionals, as required by law ”, explained lawyer Michele Sbezzi , defender of the butcher arrested by the police.
“The relationship with the woman ended six months ago” The man “was having an affair with the woman who had never told the suspect that she was expecting a baby and the relationship between them broke down about 6 months ago. When the woman called him for help, he went to her and found her with the baby in her arms. She took the baby with the intention of taking him to the hospital and then she would change her mind by deciding to go to her store. There she called a friend and together they asked for help. ”
According to the lawyer, therefore, “there was no abandonment and, in fact, the safety of the newborn was guaranteed precisely by the fact that the suspect chose to urgently call the police.” In addition, “the suspect had already given full testimony to the police several days ago, without hiding anything. Therefore, I trust that, already in the first interrogation, the investigating judge will want to revoke the house arrest measure.”
Investigators immediately heard the man who found the baby. He explained that he had noticed a plastic bag in front of his butcher shop and that he had approached it believing it contained garbage, but then, upon hearing some groans, he had discovered the newborn. At that point, again according to the 59-year-old woman’s story, she asked a friend for help. Together they decided to notify the police.
Two weeks ago, the boy was placed in a family for a year, awaiting a possible adoption. Immediately after the baby’s arrival, a solidarity contest broke out in the city and numerous gifts arrived at the hospital. All were handed over to the tutor and, consequently, to the new family. A checking account has also been opened in the child’s name in Ragusa: the child can only use it after the age of 18. The newborn could have been entrusted in another way, without any risk to her life: Vittoria has a “cradle for life”, a place where babies can be left unseen.
