The center-right National Party obtained only 25% of the votes: it is a disastrous result for the main opposition party and if confirmed it would be its second worst result in 84 years of history. The Labor Party will probably not need to form a coalition to govern, but could reach an agreement with the Green Party, currently with 8% of the vote, to ensure the formation of a left “supermajority”.

New Zealand voters were also asked to rule on two referendums on the legalization of marijuana and euthanasia. Based on polls leading up to the vote, euthanasia is likely to be approved while there is uncertainty about marijuana. The results of both referendums will be announced on October 30.
