The new Mercedes C-Class, of which the prices of the first versions have recently been communicated, only has electrified 4-cylinder engines. Along with the gasoline and diesel Mild Hybrid units, the automaker offers a plug-in hybrid version very interesting capable of offering autonomy in electric 100 km according to the WLTP cycle. And about this engine, the German brand wanted to tell a few more details.

The powertrain consists of a 150 kW (204 hp) 2-liter M 254 turbo petrol engine combined with a 95 kW (129 hp) electric unit. Generally available there is 230 kW (313 hp) and 550 Nm of torque. The gearbox is 9-speed automatic. The proceedings, unfortunately, have not yet been communicated. The electric drive is powered by a 25.4 kWh battery which, as mentioned at the beginning, allows to travel up to 100 km in electric mode (maximum speed of 140 km / h).

The accumulator consists of 96 cells. In addition, Mercedes has equipped it with a thermal management system. Thanks to this choice, the temperature is kept constant, which makes it possible to avoid stress that could compromise its duration over time. In addition, it allows the possibility of having direct current charging. In fact, on request it is possible to have the DC support to be able to make a full power 55 kW maximum power (30 minutes to load). In alternating current, the battery is recharged to a power of up to 11 kW.

The car is characterized by the presence of a sophisticated energy recovery system. The recovery power can reach more than 100 kW. In either case, drivers can set the recovery power to three levels: D, D + and D-. In particular, in program D, it will be possible to drive without having to use the brake. You will be able to experience the so-called guide “A pedal“: When you release the accelerator, the car brakes decisively until it comes to a stop.

However, the plug-in car has one intelligent management of energy use depending on the route that the electric driving mode foresees for the most favorable road sections, taking into account, among others, cartographic data, topography, speed limits and traffic conditions along the entire planned route . The driver can choose between two driving programs:

  • MAINTENANCE OF THE BATTERY: the priority is to maintain the level of charge of the battery to be able to travel in electric at a later time
  • ELECTRIC: driving in electric only up to 140 km / h with the possibility of activating the internal combustion engine by firmly pressing the accelerator pedal (kick-down)

Italian prices for the add-on have not yet been released.
