Nedo Fiano died this afternoon in Milan, in the nursing home where he was hospitalized for many years, along with his wife Rina Lattes. His son Lele, a deputy from the Democratic Party, wrote a few days ago on Facebook that the last hour was approaching: “I’m waiting for news, I’m always with the phone in hand, dad is very weak, maybe he’s tired of resisting 95 years, maybe it concluded. ” his cycle. “At 8 pm on Saturday, the holy day for the Jews, when Nedo’s life had vanished, Lele Fiano wrote another post:”Dad left us. His words and his teaching, his optimism and his will to live will remain forever. I will never have the strength that he had and that made him rise from the abyss, but I learned from him that for the battles of life and against all hatred we must always fight. This taught us the memory that it helped spread. May the land that receives him be light for Dad and may his hand always protect us over us ”.

Fiano was born in Florence in 1925 and, like so many Jewish children, with the promulgation of racial laws in 33, he had to leave school, at just thirteen years old, experiencing a dramatic isolation, which marked him forever, like Liliana Segre, of whom He was a great friend. He was then arrested with 11 members of his family in ’44 and all together they were deported to Auschwitz, with a terrible journey in armored cars, which Nedo has told generations of children and adults for many years. He still had his A5405 serial number stamped on his arm and was the only one in the family to return, after his release on April 11, 1945.
After liberation, Fiano moved to Milan, where he graduated from Bocconi and where he worked for industry, dedicating his life above all to witnessing the history of the extermination of the Jews during the Nazis. He has also written a book on its history, “A5405 The Courage to Live”, and for many years he has collaborated with the Jewish Documentation Center in Milan recounting the Holocaust. He was one of the first witnesses of the Shoah to live his tragic experience as a pedagogical tool for the new generations.
In his testimony that appeared on the portal of the Milanese Jewish community, Il Mosaico says: “I have always brought with me the smell, the darkness, the horror and the wound of that distant time.
