The Aosta court convicted the five defendants in the Geenna trial at a so-called ‘Ndrangheta venue in the Aosta Valley capital. The sanctions are: 10 years for Marco Sorbara, suspended regional councilor; 10 years for Monica Carcea, former councilor of Saint-Pierre; 11 years for Nicola Prettico, suspended municipal councilor of Aosta; 11 years for Alessandro Giachino, employee of the Casino de Saint-Vincent; 13 years for the restorer Antonio Raso.
The ruling of the panel of judges (president Eugenio Gramola, lateral judges Maurizio D’Abrusco and Marco Tornatore) came after more than seven hours in the council room. Also present at the reading of the device were the chief prosecutor of Turin, Anna Maria Loreto, together with prosecutors Stefano Castellani and Valerio Longi who coordinated the investigation. Sorbara and Carcea were accused of external competition in mafia association while the other three accused, prisoners, of mafia association: according to the Turin Dda and the carabinieri of the Aosta operational department are members of the local ‘ndrangheta of the capital Aosta Valley. Raso was also accused of attempted mafia electoral political exchange (for the alleged votes promised on the eve of the 2015 municipal elections to the then mayoral candidate of Aosta Fulvio Centoz -who refused- in exchange for jobs) and for competing in the political electoral mafia exchange. (for the supposed promises to Sorbara and Carcea of votes to the municipalities in 2015 in exchange for confidential information, from the respective municipalities, for the benefit of the local Aosta). On July 17, Gehenna’s abbreviated trial before the GUP in Turin ended with the conviction of the other 12 defendants.
From the investigation of Geenna was born another investigation of Dda of Turin and carabinieri of Aosta, Egomnia, to date not yet closed, about an alleged mafia electoral political exchange during the regional elections of the Aosta Valley in 2018 of 2019 the then president of the Region Antonio Fosson, two regional councilors of the time, Laurent Viérin (Tourism and Cultural Heritage), former president of the Region, and Stefano Borrello (Public Works), and the then regional councilor Luca Bianchi. His resignation, in December 2019, had opened a political crisis that led to early elections that, due to the closure, have been postponed to the next September 20 and 21.
‘Ndrangheta: Prosecutor of Turin, in Aosta we do our duty – “The sentences are respected. We have done our duty.” This is the comment to the reporters of the Chief Prosecutor of Turin, Anna Maria Loreto, on leaving the Aosta court after the conviction of the five defendants in the Geenna trial at an alleged premises of ‘Ndrangheta in Aosta.
