The 54-year-old won a seat on the Ompundja district council in the Oshana region. Interviewed by the media, he justified this decidedly unusual name by stating that his father did not know the German dictator and jokingly added that he had no expansionist goals of global domination.
A man named Adolf Hitler was elected district councilor in Namibia. The German Bild reported the news. The 54-year-old, after joking about it, got serious again by stating that he had nothing to do with Nazi ideology and underlining how difficult it was to break through with such a heavy name.
From the fight against apartheid to elections
Adolf Hitler Uunona was reportedly elected to the Ompundja district council in the Oshana region, according to Bild reports, receiving 85% of the headlines’ preferences. The man has dedicated his entire political career to fighting apartheid by supporting the majority party that rules Namibia, SWAPO (South West Africa People’s Organization), which has led the country since South Africa’s independence in 1990.
Nothing to do with Nazi ideology
“My father,” declared Uunona, “called me about this man, probably without knowing what Adolf Hitler represented.” The Namibian politician explained what it was like to live with this name throughout his life. “When I was a child I saw it as a completely normal name – reports Bild – Only when I was a teenager did I understand that this man wanted to conquer the whole world”. Uunona jokingly added that he had no expansionist goals. Then, getting serious again, he stressed that it had nothing to do with Nazi ideology.
