MotoGP 2020. Valentino Rossi:

After three consecutive crashes, after two games lost by Covid, Here’s a mechanical breakdown – let’s just say it’s not exactly a positive period for Valentino Rossi.

“When it came out I wasn’t even angry, on the contrary it made me laugh… Today I just needed to do a few kilometers, finish the race to prepare for next week, but that’s how it was. I didn’t get off to a bad start, then I lost time behind Bagnaia, everything happens there. But it was not bad, I felt quite comfortable with the bike, but in quattro it was silent ”.

Is the engine faulty?

“No, it is an electronic problem. They told me that for 12 years such a thing had not happened… ”.

Physically, after Covid, how are you?

“Well. From what I understand it depends a lot on how you take it. Fortunately, I had it quite light, I was able to train in the last two weeks at home. Only today I took a little lactic acid, but it is normal after a month that I do not you drive ”.

What is happening to Yamaha?

“It is not the first time that we have started the season well, then the rivals manage to improve during the year and we do not. But let’s not forget that the last race before this one was won by Morbidelli… Here, however, we have all had difficulties, we are always slow on the straight and we also have reliability problems, we struggle to finish the season with all 5 engines. Generally, if a motor is very powerful, it can break, vice versa, if it is reliable, it goes slow: we seem to have both defects. “

A big problem, considering the engines are frozen for 2021 too.

“It’s true, but in MotoGP you can do a lot of things around the engine to improve performance, from the electronics to keeping the engine cooler. You cannot work inside the engine, but what is outside, yes: I think Yamaha has the opportunity to progress if it works well ”.

Had this project come to an end?

“I don’t think the problem is number 4: our reference should be Suzuki, we have to learn a lot from them. Brivio did an excellent job, finding an excellent combination between the Japanese and the Italian / European method. I think our rivals are technically and engineering ahead. And now we are too fickle ”.

Do you think Michelin should change the rear tire for 2021?

“At least for us, this tire is not that different from last year. It looked better right away, with more grip, but it’s even smoother and there are durability issues. But for us the problems are always the same, others have understood something that we have not found ”.

Could it be a problem for Yamaha to have two such discontinuous riders in the factory team as Quartararo and Vinales?

“Yamaha has great riders: I’m not talking about myself, but Quartararo, Vinales and Morbidelli are very strong, with a competitive bike the world championship is played. It is not a driver problem ”.
