The former director of the Palermo cemeteries, Cosimo de Roberto, arrested: He is accused of corruption and extortion and is now under house arrest. By delegation of the Public Ministry of Palermo, the Carabineros of the Capital Investigation Unit complied with the order issued by the investigating judge of the Palermo court this morning.

The investigations began last February when 10 guarantees were fulfilled and, at the same time, several raids were carried out, both inside the Santa Maria dei Rotoli cemetery and in some homes of the suspects.

The carabineros documented extortion and corruption against De Roberto: behind the payment of undue sums of money (up to 800 euros), he tried to illegally find burial arrangements, without observing the rigorous chronological order imposed by the cemetery regulations.

In addition, the very serious situation of deterioration of the city’s cemetery was highlighted, in which the bodies awaiting burial remain stored for several months, causing hygiene and health problems.
