Safer Traffic Mobile, the new system adopted by the local police to improve road safety, arrives in Modena against inappropriate driving behavior
MODENA Increasingly advanced video surveillance at the service of road and urban safety. The fight against incorrect driving behaviors, such as the use of mobile phones, one of the most frequent causes of the increase in accidents in urban areas, now makes use of an innovative technological tool in Modena.
Safer Traffic Mobile is the name of the solution that the local Modena police will experiment with in the coming months to make the enforcement of the Highway Code more effective and efficient. The system was illustrated on Wednesday 16 September at a press conference at the local police headquarters in via Galilei in the presence of Mayor Gian Carlo Muzzarelli.
“The experimentation of an advanced system for the detection of infractions – says the commander of the local police of Modena, Valeria Meloncelli – is part of the road safety policies that the Municipality has. As a local police, in particular, for some time we have intensified campaigns to raise awareness and combat incorrect behavior when driving, for example, I am thinking about the use of mobile phones while driving but also about the non-use of seat belts, by adopting of new strategies that in any case require a great use of personnel ”.
With the Safer Traffic Mobile system, the six cameras mounted on a local police car (for this purpose one of the Dacia Dusters supplied with the body was chosen) allow to have a 360 degree view around the vehicle, on board which a The laptop’s touch screen continuously transmits all the very high definition images captured by the electronic eyes. Therefore, the images are used in real time by specially trained agents on board to support the investigation of violations of the Highway Code.
The system also automatically acquires all the license plates of parked and moving cars that it sees through the cameras, verifying insurance coverage and inspection.
In addition, it allows knowing the infractions to vehicles that cannot be stopped immediately for safety reasons, as is the case of a car traveling on the road in the opposite direction to that of the local police patrol. However, in the case of an immediate dispute, the report is printed immediately thanks to the printer on board the vehicle. For each violation detected, the officers have recorded three one-minute video clips with images from the front, rear and front cameras, which have filmed the violation from different angles.
“We hope that the adoption of such advanced technology – continues Commander Meloncelli – will allow us a more effective contrast with those driving behaviors that distract motorists or in any case dangerous especially for weak road users, such as pedestrians or cyclists. . and therefore allow us to reduce the accident rate in urban areas with positive repercussions on traffic, also taking into account the need to promote sustainable mobility. Obviously, technology is not enough: we are providing our agents with adequate training to optimize the use of the tool that accompanies the rest of the technologies already used by the Local Police ”.
Therefore, Safer Traffic Mobile will be particularly useful in determining infractions such as driving with a mobile phone, without a belt or lack of precedence in crosswalks, thus reducing the dispute as the alleged infractions will be documented videos and images that can be make available to both. ‘sanctioned user and any competent authority for the resource, clearly always in compliance with privacy legislation.
“We are honored to play a key role in improving road safety and the quality of life for the citizens of Modena,” said Fabio Marangini, Italian Sales Director for Safer Place, who concluded: “There is a growing need for solutions technologies that contribute to increase safety on city streets, reducing accidents, promoting traffic flow and creating deterrents. We are proud to have the city of Modena as an innovative municipality among our many clients. “
