Yesterday was a decidedly complicated day, so complicated that a request for a “state of emergency” was issued from the Region. The failure of the Panaro River embankment break, we are just north of Navicello. The alert is “red”, the degree of maximum attention and danger. Such a flood had not been recorded for 20 years in Secchia and for 50 years in Panaro.
The cause, of course, is the rain and snow of the last few days. From Saturday night until yesterday, 300 millimeters of water fell on the ridge. The decline in the flood also marked the succession of reports. The first, in the morning, on the Samone bridge, which is in serious danger of collapse. A pile is split that supports the central arch. Panaro, then, gave a break to those municipalities that enjoy a large bed. Like Marano, Vignola, Savignano and Spilamberto. Also San Cesario. He speaks differently in the field between Castelfranco and Nonantola. Firefighters and Civil Protection helicopters flew over the area, the rafts saved the citizens. Citizens and animals like a group of dogs always in the Nonantola area. And what about the Nonantolana. Due to the breakage of the embankment in the Navicello area, it has become a kind of “secondary river”. The water reached the Coop. It hadn’t happened since 1966.
In Modena, in the Fossalta area, several problems had to be solved. “Merit” in this case also of the overflowing Tiepido like the Panaro. And be careful, we are not talking about far away places. But the Jaguar dealer or Vinicio restaurant.
The closed bridges, with the Samone in a difficult situation, also went to waste in the Secchia where the flood reached record metric heights. The seriousness of the situation was also felt by being away from the waterways. Even away from that Panaro who, of course, caused the most damage. In fact, it was enough to hit the road to understand the situation. Fire trucks loaded with rubber boats and jet skis, then local police and state police, carabinieri, civil protection and the Red Cross. The most attentive will also have noticed the volunteers of the Civil Protection of Public Assistance and, why not, the Boy Scouts. Not forgetting the national association of Penitentiary Police. The Navy has also been alerted. All working, in concert with municipal administrations and employees, to try to stop what Panaro was doing. All coordinated by the Marzaglia operations center that was activated quickly. A work that has continued throughout the night and will continue today as well. As will also continue the interventions of technicians and workers from different banks. In the Navicello area, where the banks were broken, a daredevil on a bulldozer kept throwing rocks to prevent the worst. Other operations have not skimped on animal dens creating problems in these cases.
The memory leads to what happened in Bastiglia and Bomporto in 2014. Although the question, repeated during all these events, has always been one: how long is it going to rain? To tell the truth, it was not yesterday’s rain that made the “big voice” but that of the last few days (the snow and the wind on the mountain did the rest). Moral: truce today, but new rains are expected from tomorrow. –
