Migrants, 89 people saved in the Mediterranean by the artist Banksy’s boat: the story of the “pink patrol boat” Louise Michel

It is named after a French anarchist feminist, flies the German flag, and is completely painted a striking pink. It’s the boat Louise michel, funded by the artist Banksy for the rescue of migrants in the mediterranean: recovered today 89 people from a ship in distress, including 14 women and 4 children, and is looking for a safe port to dock and disembark people ashore.

The story was told by the guardian: The ship secretly sailed on August 18 from the Spanish port of Burriana, near Valencia and is now in the central Mediterranean. Banksy financed the purchase of the ship in 2019 by offering the money to Pia Klemp, former captain of several NGO ships for the rescue of migrants: “I read your story in the newspapers – The faceless artist wrote to her – You look like a tough girl, I worked in the immigration crisis and I can’t keep this money. Would you like to use them for a new boat or something? Good work, anyway. “

The commander initially thought of a joke, but it was all true: the crew is made up of activists behind them years of experience in rescue operations. The ship is an ancient half of the 31 meter long French Coast Guard: smaller, but much faster, than the other boats available to NGOs. A “civil patrol boat”, which stands out for its color among the waves and among other vessels. And the most famous (and most mysterious) writer in the world put his signature on it, painting on his side a girl with a life jacket holding on to a heart-shaped lifeline.

we need you.

In these weeks of pandemic, journalists, if we do our job conscientiously, we do a public service. Also for this reason, every day here at ilfattoquotidiano.it we are proud to offer hundreds of new content for free to all citizens: news, exclusive insights, expert interviews, surveys, videos and much more. All this work, however, comes at great financial cost. Advertising, at a time when the economy is stagnant, offers limited income. Not in line with the access boom. That is why I ask those who read these lines to support us. Give us a minimum contribution, equal to the price of a cappuccino per week, which is essential for our work.
