The legitimate question: what happens to the rules about wearing a mask in school now that the general rules about wearing Covid protection when we are outdoors change? But the answer, for now at least, is just as simple: nothing changes. and that is to say, the rules drawn up last August by the Technical Scientific Committee that provide for the use of the mask at entry and exit, during breaks and movements within the school, but not at the desk – if it is spaced by one. meter and sitting – n when doing sports.
Fears and correction
That being said, everything seems regulated and well organized. In fact, if the rule is clear enough, the application varies greatly from school to school. The message has been passed to use them as much as possible inside school buildings but, especially in secondary schools, teachers are multiplying who expect students to always have their masks on their desks (where there are desks, because for now the deliveries are far from complete). The directors let it pass. In a couple of cases in recent weeks the regional office of the school or even the municipality had to intervene. It happened in Ravenna where the city council called on the schools to correctly follow the rules without imposing excessive use of masks not justified by the current rules. In Lazio, the director of the school’s regional office, Rocco Pinneri, wrote to the principals to reiterate that if the students are sitting at the desk, immobile and a meter away, the mask can be removed without risk.
The reference to the rules
In Sicily, Commissioner Roberto Lagalla had to specify that, although the region was one of the first to impose outdoor masks, the use of these devices in schools is still regulated by current ministerial and regional guidelines. Consequently, the obligation to use masks is limited to common spaces outside the classroom, to situations of interpersonal distance of less than one meter and, inside the classroom, only if they are on the move.
Classroom problems
But anxiety in schools about compliance with security measures and fear of contagion does not diminish, also thanks to the delays in the assignment of substitutes that make the mornings of many students a path of war and in the delivery of desks. The reassuring message that Minister Lucía Azzolina gave in recent days was not enough: in the first two weeks of classes, infections were less than 1,500 among students and very few among teachers and staff. The data is not very significant from a scientific point of view: in fact, the Ministry of Health and the CTS will begin to consider the numbers of infections from mid-October when it will be possible to start counting the effects of the movement of students and your stay. at school for the entire lesson time. It must be said that the main concerns concern gatherings outside of schools and children’s evening activities. Until at least mid-October, therefore, nothing will change in terms of the rules to be followed inside schools, which continue to be distance, different entrances, hand cleaning and classroom ventilation. Younger children, i.e. 6 to 10 years old, are exempt from wearing a mask when seated and separated for learning reasons (the rule is the same in most European countries) and older children can be left without mask when they are indoors. bank because for now this is the rule that also applies to adults (in restaurants and also in offices, to give two examples).
University alarm in France and Great Britain
It is precisely the rules for the elderly that in the event of a strong increase in infections could change in the coming weeks, but for now they have not been discussed. But concern within schools is still high: the number of children who ask to return to distance education is increasing –explained the president of the rectors of Lazio Mario Rusconi – because in the classroom there is a certain tension, a certain fear also because of part of the teachers. Not only that, the autumn protests of the students that tend to turn into occupations (this year they probably won’t go that far), could have the (lack of) safety at school at the center: these days in some schools in Vicenza and Rome Se the first protests and the first self-organized student strikes began. Of course, the data from abroad, from countries that opened schools and universities at the end of August, are not very encouraging. The British government is about to close the last (and few) universities that had reopened even with face-to-face lessons, France has reduced student attendance to a maximum of 50 percent.
