The long wait is finally over: the Maserati MC20 was presented as a world premiere with a live broadcast from Modena through various digital channels. The MC20 is the sharpest point of the new Trident forged in the hot summer of Modenes, after the Ghibli Hybrid and the new Trofeo range, as well as the model that allows Maserati to perform again on a stage where it has always been the protagonist, that of the supercars that combine luxury and performance. The heir to the formidable MC12 was designed at the Modena headquarters to surprise both on the track and on the road, thanks to a power-to-weight ratio of best in class combined with sophisticated aerodynamic solutions. The MC20 is a fully tricolor racing car: it will be produced at the Viale Ciro Menotti headquarters, which has seen the birth of Trident models for 80 years, thanks to the new production line installed in the spaces where GranTurismo and GranCabrio were assembled. The plant remodel that began in January 2019 included a new paint plant.

Maserati MC20: features

The tradition is in the design, typically Maserati, despite the sophistication of the aerodynamic solutions and the materials used for the bodywork, made of carbon fiber and therefore characterized by lines that would be impossible with printing. The tangible example is represented by the form of “Butterfly” doors that open upwards, the true advance in a style that aims above all at cleanliness. The air intakes on the front and side hoods, used for engine intake and intercooler cooling, are in fact perfectly integrated into the front of the MC20, which features the new grille with the Trident logo in the center. The clean design is also ensured by the absence of showy aerodynamic appendages at the rear, with the spoiler just mentioned. However, much more striking is the generous extractor that incorporates the two exhaust pipes.

Maserati MC20: interior and infotainment

The MC20’s driver’s seat is essential, but everything revolves around maximum ergonomics, given the privilege of simple shapes, with few sharp edges. The materials chosen are black, the upholstery dark so as not to create reflections on the windshield. Everything is designed as if you were entering the cockpit of a racing car, favoring functionality and visibility. The central tunnel is covered with carbon fiber and the buttons are reduced to the essentials, so as not to distract the driving experience and to comply with the minimalist, but at the same time elegant philosophy, that guided the creation of the MC20’s interior. . The surroundings are embellished with details such as the luxury watch-inspired driving mode selector, while the sports steering wheel has been studied and designed with the help of Andrea Bertolini, Maserati Corse test driver, former world champion with the MC12 . . A thick steering wheel was preferred to maximize ergonomics and sporty feel. The MC20 is the first new generation Maserati to have the start button on the steering wheel., as well as Launch Control. A little further back we find the shift paddles attached to the steering column. The steering wheel is also available in Alcantara for those who want a sportier look. The internal environment embraces digital technology without compromise due to the presence of the 10.25-inch cluster with TFT screen and the center screen, also 10.25 inches. The MC 20 is equipped with the latest generation Mia multimedia system (Maserati smart assistant). Connectivity is guaranteed by the new Maserati Connect program, in addition to the services provided by the Amazon Alexa personal virtual assistant and Google Assist. Thanks to the integrated and connected navigation system, the driver always has the latest traffic information in real time, but also always up-to-date maps.

Maserati MC 20: engine

The new Modenese sports car weighs less than 1,500 kg and is the best in its class for the weight / power ratio of 2.33 kg / hp. Credit will go between the new 3.0-liter, 630-hp turbocharged V6 engine, dubbed Nettuno, equipped with patented technology used in Formula 1, and the carbon fiber bodywork made in collaboration with Dallara. The most powerful 6-cylinder engine in production is the result of the work carried out by the engineers with the constant support of the Innovation Laboratory in Modena. There are three main technical characteristics. The first is the pre-chamber, which is a combustion chamber interposed between the central spark plug and the traditional combustion chamber, the connection of which is made through a series of holes with a conveniently designed geometry. The second is the lateral spark plug that acts as a support to ensure the regular combustion of the engine when the latter is working at operating points where the use of the pre-chamber is not necessary. Finally, the direct and indirect double injection system: coupled with the fuel supply pressure of 350 bar, is intended to reduce noise at low revs, reduce the level of emissions and improve fuel consumption. The new Nettuno engine is equipped with a double combustion chamber for each cylinder, which uses a pre-chamber in which both the spark plug and the injector are incorporated. The air-fuel mixture is forced into the pre-chamber during the compression phase of the piston. Near top dead center, the main spark plug activates the volume of mixture contained in the pre-chamber, initiating a pilot combustion that propagates (through special holes) in the traditional combustion chamber. The process generates a combustion with a multiplicity of flame fronts characterized by high turbulence and consequently higher efficiency; This translates into an improvement in the overall performance of the engine and an increase in specific power without penalizing consumption. The new Nettuno engine guarantees a power of 210 horsepower / liter. To date, it is the best 6-cylinder engine in its class for a specific power output. The performance is indeed that of a thoroughbred sports car: top speed is over 325 km / h with acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in less than 2.9 seconds and acceleration from 0 to 200 km / h less than 8.8 seconds. The Neptune engine is paired with an eight-speed oil-bath, dual-clutch automatic transmission with 6 power gears and two overdrive gears to reduce emissions.

Maserati MC20: setup

The MC20 has five driving modes, selectable from the selector positioned in the center of the tunnel: Wet, Gt, Sport and Corsa. Each one is distinguished by a color: wet green; Gt Blue; Sport red; Yellow stroke; Esc Off orange. These affect the response and sound of the engine, the stiffness of the suspension and the speed of change. The suspension includes a double wishbone suspension system with active shock absorbers. The archetypal short spindle semi-virtual double wishbone is mounted on both the front and rear axles, for maximum handling and riding comfort. All components are forged aluminum to ensure maximum weight savings. As an option, a system is available that raises the vehicle at low speed, increasing the ride height to overcome obstacles such as potholes or too steep ramps.
