“I was out of breath”

Lorenza works at the reception of the Rocce Azzurre hotel and does not skip a shift. It doesn’t stop even in the days leading up to August 15, when you start to feel bad. Her boyfriend Antonio Marino remembers well the morning of the 12th: “He had a pain in his neck, like a stiff neck.”
However, two days later, the situation worsens. On August 14, Lorenza finishes work at 11 at night, she is worried and is accompanied to the hospital by a colleague: in addition to her neck, she has pain in her left shoulder and is breathing with difficulty. In the emergency room, a nurse advises you to go to the emergency room. It is just over a kilometer away, but it seems very far to Lorenza: she has to stop several times to catch her breath. “He was an athlete, he practiced martial arts,” recalls her boyfriend. The doctor on duty in the medical guard is not too alarmed, he gives her an injection of analgesic and fires her, according to the complaint that her mother Angela presented to the Lipari carabinieri. Lorenza is irritated: she sends a WhatsApp note to her sister in which she unburdens herself, she thinks they have treated her superficially.

“The next day we wanted to go to the beach in the afternoon. I went to look for her at the hotel, immediately after finishing the shift – says her boyfriend Antonio – But she was ill, the pains were stronger, she also had a tingling sensation in her left arm ». They then go to the doctor’s office, where another doctor visits: the doctor speculates that it may be the effects of anxiety, gives her an anti-inflammatory injection and prescribes antibiotics and nasal rinses. But not this time, Lorenza improves. On August 18, she can’t take it anymore and goes to the hospital with her mother.

Another doctor gives a new version: muscle problems, probably related to posture and a good injection. Nothing to do: the girl continues to feel bad and no one takes an X-ray At the hotel she meets a cardiologist who offers to visit her. “I was afraid that the heart was the problem,” says the boyfriend. She makes an appointment for the 22nd at the hospital: from what her mother tells the carabinieri, the doctor rules out that she has to see the heart, but recommends an X-ray.

“Help, I passed out”
There is no time. At night Lorenza goes to dinner at Antonio’s house, they eat together and watch a movie. «Then we said goodbye because the next morning we would have to go to Vulcano – her boyfriend remembers – After a while she was out she calls me in a whisper:“ I’m fainting, help ”. Antonio calls the ambulance that arrives after 15-20 minutes. Mom sees her in the hospital, screaming in pain. Then silence: collapses, dies. “They told us that he could have had a circulatory arrest or a pulmonary embolism,” said the mother.

The citizens of the Aeolian Islands took to the streets and blocked the hydrofoils. They demand justice and demand more resources for the hospital. According to the data in the possession of the Lorenza family lawyers, Vincenzo La Cava and Nunzio Rosso, of about forty health workers who would attend the hospital, they are half. “This cannot be a matter handled by the Region, because of its importance the ministry must deal with it,” the two lawyers comment.
