Lombardy is afraid again: 600 doctors ask for more interventions. The crisis unit: «Prevention is the only weapon. Milan has the biggest problems “

Only yesterday Lombardy registered +1,080 New positives, boosting – according to data released by Civil Protection – the ranking of the Regions most affected by new infections. The fear of returning to the situation of March and April is great. Of all the Lombard territory, Milan is the city that suffers the most. The one who, according to Antonio Pesenti, director of the resuscitation department of the Polyclinic and coordinator of intensive care in the Crisis Unit of the Lombardy Region due to the Coronavirus emergency, “today has the biggest problems. Six months ago the metropolis was saved from what happened in Bergamo, “he said in an interview with Corriere della Sera.

But that scenario “would be a very serious health problem because at that time we used all the regional intensive care units to treat seriously ill people with Covid (in Bergamo, Brescia and Lodi)”. “At the moment we do not know the real number of infected, and nobody can give us these data, although the traces and smears – he observes – are estimates; the only effective weapons are preventive ones: social distancing and masking. If the right decisions are made, we can still contain the contagion curve. ”

In the coming weeks, the Lombard Scientific Committee should be concerned with “identifying and treating as many outbreaks as possible that are now concentrated in families; we must also avoid overloading hospitals in every way, “explained Pesenti.

The appeal of doctors

So that what happened in the past does not happen again, almost 600 health workers, mainly from Bergamo but also from the rest of Lombardy, have signed an appeal to be sent to the institutions to express their fears about the second wave of Covid. «The foreseeable scenario will be characterized by a notable increase in requests for health services and actions. The risk is that the entire system will again be subjected to extreme stress, delaying the treatment of other pathologies, ”the doctors write.

Health professionals are convinced that “in order to achieve an efficient and orderly management of events, the discipline of the population alone cannot be enough, which has allowed us to get out of the crisis phase and imagine a new normality, but a coordinated and proactive response from the institutions in charge, the one implemented so far, is not enough. ”That is why they are calling for interventions to reduce the risk of contagion in hospitals.

Contagion, how the scenario has changed

From many sides, science agrees on one fact: Coronavirus infection has undergone a sea change. If in the first phase of the pandemic, that of March and last April, the most affected were undoubtedly those over 70 years of age, in September the highest number of cases in Lombardy occurred among those in their twenties: 1,231 against 314 patients out of 70 and 70 years. 79 years old, or 188 in his eighties. But there is more: the contagion rate between twenty and thirty years, again during the month of September, rose to 124 positives per 100,000 inhabitants. It is half the age between forty and fifty.
