The protests of the Lampedusanos and the tug of war contracted by the president of the Sicilian Region Nello Musumeci with the government finally bore fruit: sources from the Interior Ministry announce an end to tax periods until the end of 2021 and subsidized loans for the sector and hotel and for fishing (similar to those granted in seismic zones) in favor of Lampedusa. At the gates of today’s meeting between Prime Minister Conte, the island’s mayor and the governor of Sicily, some small results have been obtained. The executive also foresees two more quarantine boats for migrants, with 600 seats each, which will arrive in Lampedusa tomorrow. The tender was awarded, we know, the day before last night.
Meanwhile on the island, after the Azzurra and the Aurelia, the third quarantine ship to arrive will be the Allegra, also owned by Grandi Navi Veloci, which joins the other made available by the Viminale at the expense of the Italians, at a cost of more than 2 million euros each. A figure that makes clear how much immigration matters to the government and how much it constitutes a business for many issues. Last weekend, at least 1,500 migrants, almost all Tunisians, landed on the Italian shores. Yesterday the Sea Watch 4 obtained the go-ahead to disembark from the 353 illegal immigrants that it had embarked in recent days, so the ship was diverted to Palermo. There in the morning the immigrants will be transferred to the Allegra, which before the transfer, probably offshore, will have to complete the planned technical and sanitary inspections and have the medical staff of the Red Cross on board. However, a real solution to the problem of migrants seems to be far from being identified. Likewise, Matteo Salvini is once again on the warpath: “The League will denounce the government for helping illegal immigration – the Northern League said yesterday – if it allows the disembarkation of these other 353 illegal immigrants aboard another illegal foreign ship.”
Problems also in Sardinia, where the secretary of the Autonomous Police Union (Sap), Luca Agati, writes to the commissioner asking for “health checks (swabs or tests) to the police officers exposed in first person to contact with positive illegal immigrants”.
