South Korean National Security Director Suh Hoon said North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un apologized to South Korea for the killing of a South Korean official by North Korean law enforcement. According to reports from the South Korean news agency YonhapKim sent a letter to South Korean President Moon Jae-in, saying he was “very sorry” for having “disappointed” the president and all South Koreans involved in the case.

On Monday, September 21, South Korea reported the unavailability of a Department of Fisheries official who was on duty on a Coast Guard vessel near Yeonpyeong Island, near the North Korean border.

As later reconstructed by the South Korean Ministry of Defense, the official fell into the water with a life jacket and was found in North Korean waters the following day; the man was reportedly interrogated at a safe distance by the North Korean soldiers who had found him, then shot to death and then burned.

According to North Korea, the “unidentified” man was in North Korean waters without authorization and did not respond honestly to questions from North Korean soldiers, who had questioned him while at sea “about floating material.” about 80 meters away. As they got closer, the soldiers fired two blank shots, and seeing the man trying to escape they fired another ten shots at a range of 40-50 meters, as established by North Korean maritime security protocols.

However, North Korea reported that it did not find the man’s body, but only the remains of the floating material and a lot of blood, which were then burned as required by the country’s guidelines against the spread of the coronavirus.
