Having them can never be a problem, even if age takes its toll. But they are different, almost the opposite: let’s see why
Suarez or Dzeko can never be a problem. We are talking about two champions, two forwards who change teams. Not very young, 34 years old Dzeko, 33 Suarez, but he is still at the top. However, it is better to have clear ideas: the Uruguayan a “9” in the area, the Bosnian a defender are different, almost the opposite. The technical-tactical project will have to adapt accordingly, asking them to adapt would be a mistake. Question: what is Pirlo’s project?
Dzeko
–
Instinctively one would say: Dzeko is the most apt to live with Ronaldo and Dybala. He knows Italian football, over the years he has gradually retired until he became a “9” of movement, with touches and vision of an attacking midfielder but the physicality of a central forward. He plays with his back to the goal, he is very difficult to score, he catalyzes a thousand balls and has the technique to order them quickly, without the complexity of the last Higuaín. It’s easy to imagine millimeter sides for CR7 and Dybala gaskets. Spectacular dialogues and triangulations, many assists, more solutions in the goal area. Firmino in Liverpool does something similar with Mané and Salah who are real wings. Problem: is it in the non-possession phase? CR7 does not care, Dybala little, Dzeko ditto. Who can afford to leave three out of the median today? With Dzeko, the three-man defense could be more useful. but rigorous compensation mechanisms will be needed when opponents have the ball.
Suarez
–
At Barça, on the other hand, the first pressure fell on Suárez. Unlike Dzeko, more of a prima donna in Rome, more used to asking for the ball at his feet and complaining if it doesn’t arrive, the Uruguayan knows how to sacrifice himself. He did it with Messi, he would do it with Ronaldo (although the close friendship of the Argentine rival could trigger some rethinking in all). Suárez is a true center forward, vertical, technical, always facing the goal. It can widen to the left (a frequent area in Barça) or “fill” the area. CR7 doesn’t want to be a center forward to avoid being in traffic. He needs someone to get the defenders out of the box, not fill it, because the shot is his. Pirlo could ask Suarez to back down in the eventual 4-4-2 defense. To be honest, excluding Benzema’s totem, guys like Agüero and Mertens would be really perfect, with their fast and unpredictable movement. Having to choose we would say Dzeko, but this is one of those cases in which he always falls well.
