Juve-Napoli, the FIGC nightmare was the only possible decision. But Serie A today is less afraid

It ended as almost everyone expected, once they left the federal justice system. Juventus-Naples you will have to play, who knows when. The CONI College of Guarantees has totally subverted the verdicts of the Sports Judge and the Court of Sports Appeal, demolishing previous degrees of justice and rewriting, at least potentially, the history of a championship that already seems like a mountain to climb. And today he runs a little more risk, because the sentence is one of those that makes the Football Association tremble the wrists. Or maybe not, let’s go in order.

The only possible decision. The story has always been intricate, because it deals with different types of issues: internal relations with sports justice, federal and CONI. But also the powers of the State and the Regions, the autonomy of the sports system, the potential conflict of powers. Laws, circulars, protocols: the championship at the time of DPCM and Covid. Despite the decisions of the FIGC judicial bodies, the picture was quite clear: it was unthinkable that an ASL measure would be overcome by the fragile protocol of the football federation. Well, until the decision was made by internal bodies of the FIGC, although independent. But the decision of the Court of Appeal of Sporting immediately resembled a rock ready to be demolished by the first breath of wind: a kind of judgment on the intentions of Naples, also inconsistent in its conclusions because at that point even the 3- 0 and minus one in the rankings seemed like a caress in the face of many (disputed) atrocities. And in fact, as soon as we got to the justice that the good guys call ex-federal, it was exactly like that.

The worst for Federcalcio and Serie A. Almost a nightmare. Because there is no free space to play the game that was not played. And because as of today the protocol runs the risk of being a dead letter. The intervention of the ASL will be enough to order the postponement of a match, defying all the rules that have been given by UEFA, FIGC and Lega Serie A. In fact it was already like that: for example, it has been seen on several occasions in Serie C, where, however, the time frames are wider and indeed the arrival of healthcare has also been seen as a saving for the League. Today’s decision certifies it. With potentially troubling contours: Napoli, after all, only had two players unavailable because they were positive for Coronavirus. Worrying situation since we are worried every day of this 2020, but in the end it is far from being dramatic. Very different, to name one, from Genoa who also played in tougher conditions. Without going back on what has already been defined as an unlikely test of intent, if this is the case it is easy to imagine that any team has an incentive to question the local authority of reference in the emergence of some positivity, perhaps in view of complicated races. It is not badly thought out, it is practically written in black and white. And we are not claiming that Napoli did it, but that anyone else will have the opportunity to do it. Starting tomorrow you have to adjust the rules and protocol: they were fragile, now they are practically waste paper.

But the situation has changed. And Serie A can be saved. Everything to throw away? Up to a point, because times have changed. And with them his spirit. Juventus-Napoli in fact reached the beginning of the second wave: the future scenario was unsafe, in the sense that the danger that the championship could not end was real. The same goes for the moments when the decisions of the Sports Judge and the Court of Appeal for Sports arrived: with terrifying prospects, we reasoned about what to do in the event of a possible stoppage. And it cannot be ruled out that those sentences, although highly motivated at the legal level, took into account a context in which giving reason to Napoli would have meant putting a tombstone in Serie A 2020/2021. Today’s decision, however, came when we are one step away from crossing the midpoint of the championship, not just landing because it allows us to be sure that at least one group has been played. And also, with the times, the feeling has also changed: after the recent outbreaks of outbreaks in C (Casertana and Carpi), professional football has experienced a decidedly quiet December so far in December in this sense, especially for the Series A. The protocol is maintained. flimsy but still updated. At the moment, in short, nobody really believes that the championship is no longer ending his career. If the third wave allows it. And so if today’s decision really is the worst possible for FIGC, the good news is that at least the specter of the final stop is a little less scary. Starting tomorrow, however, we will have to go back to work to secure the championship.
