Johnny the gypsy was arrested: “The escape is always for love”

Giuseppe Mastini, said Johnny the gypsy, was arrested in Sassari. The men of the central operational service of the Police and the mobile teams of Sassari and Cagliari carried out the operation on the morning of this Tuesday, after having identified, in the last hours, the fugitive in an isolated house in the town of Zuari, in the Sassari countryside, in an area between the outskirts of the city and the San Michele di Plaianu area.

Always on the run for love, he told the agents. Mastini’s partner was not with him at the time of his arrest and she would not be in Sardinia. It is likely that she was the woman with whom Mastini spoke in narrow dialect Sinti using two intercom telephones intercepted by the police. During the escape, Mastini had dyed her hair platinum blonde.

In prison for years for three murders – the last crimes date from the late 1980s – he had escaped seven times: the last ten days, at the end of ten days of leave.

Mastini has a long history of escapes behind him: the first four were organized by reformers and prisons where he had been locked up when he was a minor; for the other three, as for the last, it was enough for him not to return to his cell after permission. The hearing for the semi-liberty was set for next February.

That of the escape was an inexplicable choice, said in unison Father Gaetano Galia, director of the Salesian Center that had welcomed Johnny in the last year and a half of his leave, and the lawyer from Turin Enrico Ugolini. I am not disappointed by the betrayal of trust – added Don Gaetano – but because I fear that his reintegration process is definitely concluded; now his destiny is escape or prison, from the point of view of recovery as if he were dead.
