After more than two days of fighting like a lion, the heart of Gioele carletti di San Cesareo (Rome) gave up and stopped beating yesterday afternoon. Two terrible days, the ones spent next to the bedside of this 4-year-old boy who has not yet been reached, in a coma since Wednesday after falling into the pool at his house. Conditions immediately seemed desperate, but when doctors were able to suck all the water out of the lungs Thursday at the Infant Jesus in Rome, a small glimmer of hope was rekindled.

For another 24 hours, the little boy clung to life. A huge effort that was not enough. As soon as the news spread, despair assailed relatives, friends and simple acquaintances who, remembering the lively gaze of this child for two days, had not accepted the idea that he could not attend. It all started at 1 pm on Wednesday when, after a morning of work at a daycare center in Palestrina, Tatiana Pizzuti, the mother, returned home with Gioele. As was often the case, while the young woman was preparing lunch, the little girl played in the garden.

At one point, the boy fell into the pool in front of the house. Dramatic moments, before Tatiana realized it and ran to get it out, during which the water invaded her lungs. Attracted by the screams of the woman, neighbors and relatives took to the street intercepting a patrol of carabinieri from the Palestrina mobile unit that activated the rescue machine. Two ambulances and helicopter 118 were at the scene, but the situation was already desperate. Joel had lost consciousness, even went into cardiac arrest, and it took doctors almost 40 minutes to revive him.

An infinite time that has caused irreparable damage. Once stabilized, he was transported to the Child Jesus where he underwent all the necessary treatments. Difficult and very hard work, the child was in a coma and the brain could have been damaged. Joel tried, until last night, when he gave up, leaving everyone in the deepest pain. Now all of San Cesareo, where the family lived at 5 via Colle Nobeletto, gathers around Father Ferdinando, installer of security doors, and Mother Tatiana, a kindergarten teacher. The tragedy of Joel’s death is a very hard blow in a period of peace for this family, given that on August 2 the couple celebrated their 5 years of marriage and two weeks ago their 7-month-old daughter was baptized.
