Jio Coronavirus Symptom Checker exposed user data
According to a report by TechCrunchJio’s Coronavirus Symptom Verification Tool faced a security lapse in one of its key databases due to millions of user data being exposed on the Internet. The news came to light through security researcher Anurag Sen, who contacted TechCrunch to obtain the same.
The leaked database had millions of users who had taken the Coronavirus Symptom Verification Test. The data included information about who took the exam, the user’s browser and operating system information, and answers to questions on the exam. In some cases, users’ exact location information was also exposed. This included places like Mumbai and Pune in India and even user location data from the UK and North America. In addition to this, the database had a website error log and other system messages.
TechCrunch contacted Reliance Jio about the data breach and the database was removed shortly thereafter. Jio Tushar Pania’s spokesman, in a statement, said: “We have taken immediate action. The registration server was for monitoring the performance of our website, intended for the limited purpose of people self-checking to see if they have any symptoms. COVID-19“
However, it is not known if anyone had access to the exposed data.
For those who don’t know, Jio introduced the Coronavirus Symptom Checker within their MyJio app in March. The tool requires users to answer a couple of questions and find out whether or not they have symptoms of COVID-19 to finally consult a doctor for it.
