Following the instructions of Minister Luigi Di Maio, the embassy in Paris formally expressed to the French authorities the Italian “strong disappointment” over the measures to protect the Mont Blanc natural area adopted by the Haute-Savoie prefecture and which have also affected territories under Italian sovereignty. “These unilateral measures, which cannot and should not affect the Italian territory,” Di Maio clearly indicated, according to a note from Farnesina, “cannot have any effect and are not recognized by Italy.”
In the official note sent to the French authorities – the Farnesina note reads – the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled that the French side had expressed its willingness to address these issues within the mixed commission that deals with border maintenance. In this context, Minister Di Maio wanted to recall that Italy and France had agreed on the need to “avoid any unilateral initiative by local authorities” in these areas.
The minister – the note continues – also requested that the French authorities formulate a request for intervention in the Prefecture of Haute-Savoie so that it does not include “in official local measures the areas beyond the border that fall within Italian territory and they are as such under the sovereignty of the national team of Italy “.
