THE ATLANTIC DOOR IS EXPANDED. A vast low-pressure channel stretches from the North Atlantic to the central Mediterranean, with intense disturbances moving inside it, reaching Italy, giving rise to severe weather conditions. The north, the Tyrrhenian regions and much of southern Italy were particularly affected, where between the weekend and the Immaculate Conception there were situations of strong flooding, with floods, landslides and also with a victim in Basilicata in the Potentino. And in the Alps it still snows a lot, with some high altitude places submerged by meters of snow.
BAD WEATHER IN THE NORTH AND TIRRENO. A frontal system has reached the northern regions, renewing the bad climatic conditions with rains that affect most of the regions. New amounts of water are added in areas where the situation was already critical due to the flooding phenomena of the last days, as in Emilia and in Triveneto. Only between Saturday and Sunday did they fall more than 600 mm of rain in some areas between Veneto and Friuli, with strong floods, landslides and floods, as well as strong repercussions on road connections due to the collapse of some bridges in the Belluno area. In South Tyrol, the Brennero railway is stopped between Bolzano and the state border, while the A22 northbound between Vipiteno and Brennero and the state highway in both directions have been blocked since last night.
Meanwhile, this morning, Monday, it started to rain again in northern Italy, even if the most significant phenomena affected the Northwest during the night. But the situation remains critical also in Emilia and, in particular, in the Modena area, due to thePanaro flood. In eastern Modena, the river bank suffered a severe fracture some 40 meters long, leaking huge amounts of water that flowed towards the inhabited centers and completely flooded them.
SNOW AT LOW ALTITUDES IN THE ALPS. in the meantime it has snowed again in much of the Alps even at low altitudes, from 400/600 m, slightly higher in the easternmost sector. It is precisely in the eastern sector where the most important accumulations are registered, with about two meters of fresh snow in Val d’Ultimo and Val Passiria, even at high altitude, accumulations of up to 3 meters can be recorded.
REVERSE ON TIRRENO, VICTIM IN BASILICATA. Bad weather does not spare the central-south regions, which mainly affect the Tyrrhenian side, directly exposed to the flow of humid and unstable western currents. The rains and showers spread like a patch from Tuscany to Calabria, even with less intensity than the weekend. During the weekend a person lost his life in Basilicata nel Potentino, in Pignola. He is a man who worked for the municipal technical office who was overwhelmed by water from a canal, busy monitoring the consequences of bad weather.
WEATHER THE NEXT HOURS. Rains and showers will affect the northern regions, even in the afternoon will tend to focus on the Triveneto and in particular the areas near the Alps. A temporary glow will occur in the northwest, even if at night there will be a new deterioration in Liguria and Piedmont, with rain and snow at low altitude, sometimes even on the plains. In the rest of the Alps, the snow level is about 400/600 m. Bad weather also in the central-south regions with showers and thunderstorms on the Tyrrhenian side, temporarily tending to decline during the day before a further deterioration at night starting in Tuscany. Snow in the north-central Apennines of 800 / 1000m, rising to 1200m in the afternoon in the Lazio-Abruzzo sector. Bad weather even in Sardinia with showers and thunderstorms especially at dusk. Instead, it will work best in the Adriatic regions, leeward of the Apennines, with abundant gusts, except for some rains in the morning in the Marches. Tense winds from the west-southwest. Lowering temperatures. For all the details go to the section Time in Italy.
