The black november of COVID-19, the peak of the second wave. The nightmare numbers, photographed by the latest report from the Higher Institute of Health, which see the increase in deaths weigh like a stone in the history of our country. Almost thirteen thousand deaths (12,904) in just 30 days, swept away by the wave of a virus that doesn’t look anyone in the face.
In the same period of time, more than 800 thousand people have been infected, half of the total registered since the beginning of the emergency. Of course, a number doped by the substantial increase in the swabs of the second phase that shows how the data for the period between February and May was greatly underestimated. “What caused the pandemic is a stress that has not been punctual, such as an earthquake or a flood, it is a stress that lasts more than a year and will accompany us for about a year and a half,” said the president of the ISS. Silvio Brusaferro who admits that “they are implementing adaptation strategies that will leave their mark in the future.”
THE INFECTED. The positive profile sees a slight majority among women (51.7%) compared to men (48.3%) and an average age that rose to 48 years after the decline in the summer period. Then there are the healthcare workers, the angels on the front line. And also – perhaps above all – for them, November turned out to be a month of suffering: 22,712 were infected in just thirty days, many died with the total number of victims among the white coats (this time since the beginning of the epidemic) that reached 271 Fifty are nurses, 221 are doctors. Meanwhile black, however, a light: in a month the cured were 304.53.
DATA FROM YESTERDAY. There are another 672 deaths in one day: 42 more than last Monday. But the contagion slows down, albeit in parallel with the usual low number of swabs at the weekend: 16,377 positive cases compared to 130,524. Seven days ago there were 22,930 with 148,945 swabs. This is the lowest figure since October 22. The number of beds occupied in intensive care continues to fall (-9) but the number of hospitalized in ordinary wards is rising again (+308).
