“The case that most caught our attention is that of a 48-year-old man who arrived in a private ambulance from the Caserta province to the Frosinone hospital. Had the COVID-19, was serious, unfortunately died a few days in intensive care. Every day we register dozens of patients who come from Campania to our hospitals. Alessio D’Amato is the Regional Health Councilor of Lazio. In these hours, in addition to the 2,800-2,900 new positives per day, you must control another phenomenon: Covid patients are arriving in Lazio from Campania and this runs the risk of aggravating the already complex situation of hospitals in the provinces of Frosinone and Latin.
What can be done to stop these trips?
“It is not easy. We welcome about 50 patients from other regions, especially Campania. Of course, theoretically, from that region, which is in the red band, you cannot move. There is a great collaboration with the police headquarters of the Lazio provinces that are on the border with Campania. But if a patient arrives in a private ambulance, perhaps even in serious condition, how can we refuse him? “
For you, however, it means reducing the resources available, which are already few, to respond to patients in Lazio.
“We are aware of it. The phenomenon is especially affecting the hospitals of Frosinone, Latina, Cassino and Formia. There is a channel for dialogue with Campania, but here we are faced with spontaneous initiatives by citizens, it is not easy. You can block a private car that violates the red zone, but how do you do it with an ambulance? In terms of hospitalizations, we are still in a delicate situation, even though we have already activated the new 2,300 beds that we had planned.
The epidemic does not stop even in Lazio, even if it is a region in the yellow band.
“The situation has stagnated in terms of the number of infections. We are on the plateau, there is a slowdown. But everything is happening very, very slowly. Even with regard to hospitalization, we are still not safe. In recent days they have decreased, but the complexity has increased.
The control room meets again on Friday to evaluate the 21 parameters based on which the level of closures is decided region by region. Will Lazio be able to stay in the yellow band and therefore limit closings?
I would like to be clear. For me the yellow band is not a medal, what matters are the parameters, the numbers. So, I do not deny that I would not mind greater caution, greater caution also in Lazio, with the positioning in the orange zone. That being said, our Rt is declining, based on available data, we will probably settle below 1, while last week we were at 1.04. In short: according to the numbers, there should be no passage in the orange zone. But now it is up to all citizens, with their behavior and with respect for the regulations, to ensure that the conditions for which the transition to the orange band would be inevitable do not materialize ”.
Do you have a Christmas in mind without the current closings? Today bars and restaurants have to close at 6 pm, for everyone the curfew starts at 10 pm Even on the yellow strip.
“In this also we must be clear. It makes no sense to assume that all restrictions are removed for the Christmas period. In the best of cases, if there is no worsening of the epidemiological situation, we can hypothesize that Lazio remains in the yellow band, therefore with the current bans ».
In Lazio today there are 73,491 positives currently. During the first wave, it was discovered that the asymptomatic infected were many more, at least seven times more, than those resulting from official data. Could it still be like this today?
I exclude it. Today we are doing a lot of swabs, in the first wave this was not possible. We use rapid antigenic tests very frequently. An innovation begins at these times: they can be done, with reservation, even at the pharmacy. And we are buying 600,000 rapid salivary tests that we will use for children, in pediatric units but also for screening tests in schools. There are far fewer asymptomatic patients who escape, on the order of 10 percent compared to the first wave. ‘
