In eleven years the Italian population has increased by some 200 thousand units, an increase that is attributed to the component of foreign citizens. This was pointed out by Istat in the report on the ‘Permanent Population and Housing Census – First dissemination of the final data 2018 and 2019’. And even Rome (the municipality with the most inhabitants in the country) is in line with the national trend.
Italian data in a nutshell
The census population in Italy as of December 31, 2019 amounted to 59,641,488 residents, around 175 thousand people less than on December 31, 2018, which is equivalent to -0.3%, but is substantially stable in comparison with 2011 (the year of the last traditional type census), when there were 59,433,744 residents (+ 0.3%, for a total of +207,744 people). In fact, a very slight increase, the result of a decrease of 800 thousand units in the population of Italian citizens and an increase of around one million foreign citizens.
The census of Rome
As for Rome, the municipality has 2,808,293 million inhabitants as of December 31, 2019, a very slight increase of about 200 thousand units compared to 2011. The component of foreign citizens contributes to the increase, albeit slight, of residents . Among the inhabitants surveyed, 347,655 are of foreign nationality, compared to 224,493 in 2011. 151,963 foreign residents come from Europe, 118,752 from Asia. The main countries of origin in the order are Romania (82,600 inhabitants), Pakistan (38,262), Bangladesh (29,600).
Degree of education
Even looking at the main Roman indicators, and taking into account a generalized decrease in the population, a decrease in general educational levels is observed between 2018 and 2019. Illiterates amount to 7,353 (in 2018 there were 6,728), non-qualified alphabets fall to 82,505 (there were 84,848 in 2018), and even so the inhabitants with a primary education license drop from 295,391 to 282,871. And the number of citizens with a high school diploma is also down: 582,816 compared to 588,052 the previous year.
The ocupation
Turning then to the data regarding labor employment of the population, we have a workforce of 1,330,264, in 2018 it was 1,346,436. Employees as of December 31, 2019 were 1,158,077 compared to 1,147,663 in 2018. The labor discrepancy between men (620,054) and women 538,023 remained stable in both years. The number of male and female students increases to 205,128 from 199,068. While that of housewives is reduced to 239,875 from 244,914.
