In 2020, tourist flows in Europe suffered a profound impact. The provisional data for Italy for the first nine months of the year are in line with the European trend (-50.9% over 2019, with almost 192 million fewer visitors). The hotel sector is the one that suffers the most: attendance registered in the first nine months of 2020 is less than half (46%) of those registered in 2019, while those in the non-hotel sector 54.4%. It arises from Istat data on the tourist movement in Italy.
Intense red in the main data published by Istat in the first three quarters of 2020: the presence of foreign tourists fell by 68.6% (they were 190 million in 2019). Large art cities have been badly damaged, registering a 73.2% drop in admissions, while in 2019 they had been around a fifth of total admissions. Italians’ trips for work dropped drastically (-59%) and, to a lesser extent, but still large, those on vacation (-23%).
