Hanged in prison – The athlete’s story ends with the worst possible epilogue, strung up today in prison in his hometown, Shiraz, in southern Iran. Top justice officials told this to state media. It was worth nothing mobilization from the international community, from Amnesty International to sports associations, and even from the President Trump, who in a tweet had publicly called for his release.

He accuses them – Afkari had been arrested on suspicion of murder for having stabbed a worker to death in the shock of the protests that went through Iran in 2018. In prison the combatant had admitted his responsibilities but his lawyer Hassan Younesi has always maintained that it was a confession taken from the torture. In a prison recording, Afkari himself would have confirmed the lawyer’s version.

None clemenza not even for Afkari’s two brothers, Vahid and Habib. They also participated in popular uprisings and were sentenced to 54 and 27 years in prison respectively.
