Here are the iPhones for which the update will be released and many other details.

From the WWDC 2020 stage, the Apple team unveiled the new version of the operating system for iPhone and iPad.

iOS 14 presents interesting news and, above all, striking: with this new version of the operating system, in fact, it definitely comes the updated house, which is enriched with widgets and new ways to access applications.

But let’s go in order and see what happens new in iOS 14.

New home

The most obvious novelties of iOS 14 are undoubtedly those related to new home. These are three great innovations that will completely redefine the appearance of the iPhone.

Application library

With iOS 14 we can finally get rid of the endless pages full of applications to scroll through, thanks to Application library. With the new update, in fact, it is possible remove home pages: The applications contained in the deleted pages will be included within the App Library, a kind of smart folders that group the applications by categories.

The application library is available by scrolling to the bottom of the home screens. From the application library screen, you can search for applications or explore them using a ready to list.

Widget

With iOS 14 i widget debut on Apple smartphones. Widgets are components that provide information about the application in question or allow you to quickly perform precise actions.

Until now we had only seen them by sight Today – accessible with a swipe to the left – while now they can be integrated directly into the home, in the middle of other applications.

Widgets can be of different sizes and can be grouped into Smart battery– This is a particular widget, containing multiple widgets that change automatically throughout the day or can be changed manually with a swipe.

Picture in Picture

As has already been seen in macOS, even in iOS comes the possibility of watching videos in image in image, that is, in a floating and resizable window.

Translator

With iOS 14 comes a new translation app, designed specifically for translating conversations, as the interface clearly suggests.

It supports 11 languages (including Italian) and a mode is available on the device that allows you to perform translations offline, for privacy.

Choice of default apps

If you don’t use system apps like Safari or Mail, you will love iOS 14 – with this update you can actually choose third party software like default application.

Craig Federighi didn’t mention it explicitly in the presentation, but the card that appeared on the summary screen (which you can see above) leaves no doubt: you can use (for example) Chrome or Firefox as the default browser, GMail or AirMail as the default client for emails and so on.

Messages

Apple has finally revamped the Messages app, which now includes many features that you would expect to find in a messaging app. In particular, it is now possible to:

  • Reply to a message by creating a “thread”i.e. online responses to follow the conversation
  • Tag someone with an @ followed by the username (for example @Giuseppe), a useful function to attract the attention of the interested party in a group chat;

There are also new items to customize memoji and new memoji stickers.

Digital keys

This is one of the most interesting features, although it only affects a very small number of people: those who have a compatible car.

With iOS 14, in fact, it is possible use iPhone as car key– Simply move the smartphone closer to unlock the lock and turn on the car, via the NFC chip.

In addition, even more interesting, this function gives the possibility of share digital keys car with another person via Messages. A very useful function to share the car with someone.

Finally, digital keys can be temporarily disabled from iCloud, in case you lose your device.

Siri

With iOS 14, Apple’s voice assistant gains a new one compact interface and the ability to send voice messages.

Clips

Apple Clips is a new feature in iOS 14 that allows you to run a part of the application without having it installed– Simply scan a QR code, “attach” the appropriate NFC tags, or click a link to launch content in a window on the screen.

This is a very cool new feature, which will prevent users from installing dozens of applications that they will (almost) never use, and at the same time discovering new software.

Clips is designed, for example, to quickly leave a review on Yelp, launch an app to rent an electric scooter, etc.

Other

There are many other minor features being introduced with this update, which you can find below:

  • Where is: the application Where is, will support third-party devices and accessories, with a certified accessories program;
  • Incoming calls are not in full screen– Finally, incoming calls are no longer required to be displayed in full screen
  • News for maps, with directions for traveling by bicycle and electric car (taking into account the charging stations). Unfortunately, none of this is coming to Italy at this time.

IPad News

In addition to the novelties announced so far, which will be available on both iPhone and iPad, Apple has also announced some features that will be exclusive to iPadOS 14.

First of all, we find a redesign of the interface, but above all the possibility of interacting (copy, cut, move …) of the text written with Apple Pencil, which will be recognized automatically.
