It’s good to be on pole, but this is perhaps the worst circuit to be there, especially in the wake of the cars this year. It will be easy to overtake at the beginning due to the difference in tires and it will be difficult to win the race. But I’ll try to stay optimistic and figure out how to move on. Max Verstappen (Red Bull, 2nd): “I think we were struggling a bit to find the right balance on this track which is quite slippery. Even this morning we weren’t happy and during qualifying we worked to get the balance right. In Q3 in particular, the last attempt was not bad. I was not expecting second place on the grid and I am very satisfied. If I start quietly, there is a great wake-up effect. We hope to have a good positioning and then we will see what happens at Turn 2. It will also be interesting for tomorrow’s strategies ”.
Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes, 3): “I’ve been going well all weekend, I had a good pace. In Q1 and Q2 I did well. In Q3 I thought I had won some points but obviously there was still room. Here it is difficult to find the right temperature for the tires. On the first attempt in Q3 the tires were too cold and then on the second I thought I was going faster. I don’t know, we have question marks. But third place here is still a good starting position and I will have the right tires. Once I started third here and then I remember what it was like (won the race, ed). I will try to repeat myself. I think I have a good advantage on the first stint with the right tires. There’s still everyone at stake”.
